At least he's not on fire...

Mass Effect 4 was pretty much made official last week thanks to a little bit of tweeting from BioWare, but now, it’s super-official, according to a new blog post from Montreal studio director Yanick Roy. The next cycle is coming, and it’s going to look damn pretty, as it’ll make full use of the Frostbite 2 engine that Battlefield developer DICE has been toiling away on.

In the blog post, Roy explained that the Montreal branch of BioWare would be handling the new series entry, with Casey Hudson and the Edmonton studio that was behind the first cycle of Mass Effect games, supporting them.

Roy said that Mass Effect 4 would also make use of several elements that would be present in the upcoming Dragon Age 3, saying that “There is really not much I can tell you about the game right now, except that it will be built with the amazing technology of Frostbite that acts as a foundation, enhanced by many of the systems the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building.”

The other thing I can tell you Is that, while it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both gameplay and story on the fronts.

You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.

Montreal is hiring for the project right now, which is why I’m busy typing up a CV that will hopefully get me close enough to demand more Tali-centric DLC in the studio, before security tasers me.

Using the Frostbite 2 engine gives the next Mass Effect game some serious graphical power, as it can handle anything from shooters through to racers. Of course, visuals don’t equal great gameplay, but I bet quite a few people would love to see a FPS version of Mass Effect. Or a kart racer, because that cycle is looking to repeat itself right now in gaming. Still, you’ve had your say as to what you’d like to see in a new Mass Effect game already.

Now tell us which genre that you’d love to see your PC or console experience for a new game in the cycle.
