Microsoft explains why Red Dead Redemption backward compatibility was yanked

RDR

For a short while this weekend, a handful of highly anticipated Xbox 360 games were available to play on the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility mode. The list of games made available to some included Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Halo Wars, Left 4 Dead, and one of the most requested game for backwards compatibility: Red Dead Redemption.

The way to get said games working this weekend was convoluted, and only worked with digital versions of said games, but according to those who did manage to get them going, they ran rather damned well. Microsoft has since patched them up, to stop them from working.

But why?

According to Microsoft, they were listed in error – and shouldn’t have been available to view or download.

“Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles. Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available,” Microsoft’s Major Nelson said on Reddit.

“We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We will have more information on upcoming releases soon.”

According to some, those who’ve stayed off line since downloading the games are still able to play them, but that’s a bit silly. They’re obviously coming to the backwards compatibility program at some point in the future, so a little patience is all that’s needed before heading out and taking over the west. Again.

Both Skyrim and Call of Duty Black Ops 2 have overtaken Red Dead Redemption in the list of requests for backwards compatibility.

The Xbox One’s backwards compatibility is a pretty nice feature, though it’s something I think people like the idea of more than they’ll actually use it.

Trying to get Rockstar to put some effort into making that game available to more people is like trying to convince Ubisoft that Uplay isn’t what the people want.

Strange. Kinda feels like this generation is trying very hard to profit off last gen’s games.

All the remasters we saw stemmed from publishers being unsure about how well the new gen would do. This is why there weren’t that many new games or sequels upon release.

well, why not? They are in business. Also, no charge for the BC. But if a BC game comes up that I really want and is cheap, I will probably buy it.

I wonder how age affects this. As you get older you tend to lose interest after on or two playthroughs.

You ever get that feeling of over familiarity where a game has little to no intrigue or mystery left and you find yourself almost in a state of contempt of it ?

Not sure what you mean ? If you can download them for free it’s very cool. But on Ps4 there is a price.

It’s dangling a nostalgia flavored carrot in front of us. And all the re-masters. Backswards compatibility is a neat concept at best. If you own all those games, surely you own the old consoles as well ? If not, then it works for you. For me personally.. I look forward to new experiences and only have a handful of last gen games I theoretically would play.

If I had the right games, I would be playing BC games now. Such as Mass Effect 2.

BUT, am playing Witcher 2 in compat mode and it is working very, very well. Is fun. Will play it slowly, as have had 3 bites at that apple.

As a new player you might struggle a bit playing it solo, some of the mission types aren’t exactly solo-friendly for people with low level gear and few mods.

Dunno about PS, but on PC you literally can’t play without logging in online even if you want to only play solo.

I more meant I don’t think anyone I know plays on PS, don’t mind playing online, have to with Helldivers as well.

That’s not really a problem, just leave your game set to public. Either you’ll join someone else’s game or someone can pop into yours. If someone’s playing the same mission as you that is. A lot depends on how many people are playing that particular mission.

You’ll need to spend some time working through the star map and leveling gear before you need to worry about entering the void, that’s when you need to form groups upfront – and there’s recruiting chat for that.

Red Dead Redemption was one of the dullest games I have played in my life! Hell, I even decided to go watch Twilight than play through that drivel.
