Last week, Microsoft registered Microsoft-Sony.com and Sony-Microsoft.com, leading to much speculation – in gaming circles, at least – that the bitter rivals of HD console gaming had joined together in unholy union to build a utopian chimera gaming device with Sony hardware and Microsoft infrastructure and development tools.

Well, that’s just not happening.

Microsoft’s Frank Shaw, lead corporate communications for Microsoft, tweeted this before the weekend :

re: sony/ms domain names: Sony = great MS partner. No scoop here, this was just a defensive domain hold. Let’s move on to weekend, kay? 🙂

So there you go, there’ll be no X-Station or PlayBox (both of which, curiously, sound like they could revolutionise the interactive adult entertainment industry) , putting paid to your dreams (or perhaps nightmares) of a unified gaming platform.

Editor. I’m old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time – they were capable of being masterpieces. I’m here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
