Microsoft Xbox 360 Sales Plunge 60%

Not good news for Microsoft but InformationWeek.com is reporting that sales of the 360 are down 60% compared to the same quarter last year. That is bad news no matter how you spin it.

So why has this happened? Well the highly publicised reliability problems must be a part of it, the rumour of a price drop coming towards the end of the year could also be a part. We are also hearing about a new 65nm chipset codenamed Falcon coming later which might be why people are holding out.

However how many casual gamers know about any of those reasons? Could it be more to do with the Wii and PS3 now being available? From the sales figures I would guess that the PS3 has made no difference to the sales but  casual gamers have been flocking to the Wii in droves and this could easily be the reason for the drop.

In real terms Microsoft sold 1.1 million less Xbox 360’s in the last quarter than they did last year. Only selling 700 000 units.

Now with Halo 3 and a possible price cut in the next 2 months I fully expect the sales to sky rocket…. It will be interesting to see the end of year sales compared to last year.
