British studio RARE Ltd. was once one of the most respected studios in the world. working almost exclusively with Nintendo, the company ushered in fan-favourites like Battletoads,  Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong Country, Perfect Dark and Goldeneye 007. It also produced a fighting game, a proper sequel to which fans have been clamouring for for a decade and a half; Killer instinct. Since the company’s acquisition by microsoft though, Rare’s been stuck making avatar stuff and Kinect games.  Killer Instinct though, could be back.

Microsoft’s gone and renewed its trademark and registered new Killer Instinct related domains. This in itself would probably mean nothing – except for the fact that Microsoft took the opportunity to announce it all.

"With all due respect to our friends in the media who like to frequent trademark sites, we thought we’d break this one ourselves," MS said via their Xbox Live Arcade blog.

"Our legal eagles have authorized us to say: We have either renewed or refiled a trademark application in various jurisdictions."

People have begun to wonder if we’ll be seeing a brand new Killer Instinct – or perhaps an HD remake of Killer Instinct Gold; but judging from the source of the information I’d say a remake on the cards. Still, some Killer Instinct is better than no Killer Instinct, right?

C-C-C-C-OMBO BREAKER!
