Okay I have to admit that I am a little confused about the recent spate of news about the fact that Microsoft are already working on their next console.
Isn’t this blatantly obvious? I bet if I went back and did some searching I would find a Microsoft employee who admits it… yet people still keep writing stories about it to prove that Microsoft don’t know what they are doing.. Anyway I just had to get that off my chest…
Bruce Everiss of Seeking Alpha has written a theoretical article about what he thinks the Xbox 3 will be like and why it will give Microsoft market supremacy…
He think Microsoft are going to release a handheld gaming device which will integrate seamlessly into the next Xbox which will also have a gesture (Wii) interface and more than likely a high definition drive of some sort….
Isn’t that the PlayStation 3?
Anyway he also thinks that the new Xbox will arrive next year sometime which I think is mad, I don’t expect to see it until the holiday season of 2010 at the earliest.
However what he does have a point with is that Microsoft normally become dominant in an industry during their third generation (if they last that long) and it is obvious that the 360 is going to hold its own in this generation at least. So is having someone like Microsoft as the dominant console a good idea?
Here’s hoping each console gets 33% market share….

While he’s right about MS always taking the market at version 3 of their products (Windows, IE,etc) I find the seeking Alpha guys full of BS and feel the need to hit something every time one of them opens their mouth.
They’re pretend to be informed analysts when their idea’s are just stupid. There’s no way MS would consider releasing “Xbox 3” so soon, it makes absolutely no financial sense, would alienate customers, and would not be that different that it offered anything that couldn’t be done on a 360.
From everything I’ve read of seeking alpha, they’re just a bunch of PS fanboys that pretend to be impartial to try say “soft” things against the 360. (news of an imminent update would reduce 360 sales)

No matter if you are the biggest PS3 fanboy out there, you got to give MSoft kudos for gaining this much market share against Sony, RROD and all.
If you look at how fast technology is progressing, you got to ask yourself one question, do you still want to play games on an Xbox360 or PS3 after 2010? Not me.

hmm… Market Supremacy, bold words.
I guess we’ll see, Nintendo has taken this round on hardware. Sony and MS are neck and neck. MS is kicking ass on software.
As for his predictions, I guess there are some reasonable exterpolations of current trends there. BUT i don’t see MS going into the handheld market. Zune with some extra casual gaming features perhaps, but not a PSP/DS competitor yet. and definitely not before 2010/11. If they enter that market, it will be after the next xbox iteration is out.
I also think that he’s overplaying the importance of a gesture based control system. I see the next xbox controller being the same as the current one with tilt. Like the PS3. I doubt they’re going to mess with that.
