It seems the console war has fallen to an all time low now, instead of trying to outdo each other with better content, hardware or accessories the two big guns (Microsoft and Sony) have decided to turn it into a hard drive comparison.

I have already said that I think Microsoft are making a mistake by releasing a 60GB 360 as it isn’t required and doesn’t add much value to the system. However despite my complaints they did it anyway and now Sony are reacting.

Please welcome to the war the latest PS3 iteration, the 160GB PS3. Everything else seems to be exactly the same as the previous 40GB but now it’s bigger.. and bigger means better right?

However if you are on the market for a PS3 (and live in the States) then I still recommend getting this one as it comes bundled with Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and a voucher for the PSN game PAIN for only $499.99.

Having a bigger drive has benefit for the PS3. Since it’s a lot more than just a gaming console, more space means storing more media on the unit itself and as prices of storage comes down, it makes sense for them to do a technology revise on their consoles and give you more space for the same price. The PS3 has also revised the models to include the DS3 controller.

The XBOX may not benefit much from a bigger Hard Drive now in this country, but where do you store those movies, optional and mandatory game installs that we will see soon with games like FF? Space is always an issue for a lot of gamers, so they are just responding to that requirement.

Let’s not forget that the PS3 has a userservicable upgrade as well. I’ve been running with a 250GB in my PS3 for about a year now, but not all console owners are willing to do all the manual purchasing and simple installation of a new drive. They would rather just buy the console all pre-configured.

I also think that the larger hard drive is a bonus for those living in the states and in europe. I know my buddies oversees have their Xbox’s set to automatically download all arcade games and demos as they are released and space is an issue fro them.

but this is a really good thing if you ask me, I mean, now that problem of running out of harddrive space for game installs is pretty much over… but I’m still happy with my 60 gb, i got most of my music (40gigs) on it and I left the rest for game installs, how ever… I am getting that feeling that maybe i should purchase a bigger hdd for all my movies and such.
