Mortal Kombat needs next-gen innovation, not more characters

Now kith! I mean fight!

I’m still head over heels in love with Mortal Kombat, as the pseudo-reboot of the gory franchise is one of my fighting game highlights of this generation. I’m not the only person who felt that way though, as the game sold bucket-loads of copies across platforms. A sequel is pretty much inevitable in this day and age, something that series co-creator Ed Boon says will need to do more than just throw in a few new characters, and might even be a next-gen game as well.

"Just philosophically, I don’t think we could take the approach of doing the same thing but adding new characters in our next Mortal Kombat game," Boon said to CVG. "We definitely want to do something new with it, we feel we have to introduce something into the mix."

And that’s something that Boon believes cannot be accomplished on current consoles, possibly revealing that the next chapter in evisceration will be on the next gaming platform from Sony and Microsoft:

If you introduce another edition of your game on the same console, you cannot provide a radically different experience. I’m sure, if we were to do a new Mortal Kombat game on next generation systems, I think we would be able to provide dramatically different experiences.

That’s not to say that Boon and NetherRealm posse isn’t working on some sort of game that involves people being face-punched really hard, as they’re currently developing Injustice: Gods Among Us, which sees various DC Comics characters battle one another, due for release next year.  "I’m a big fan of fighting games, but some of them I’ve seen are just a re-skin of the same game with much prettier graphics and new characters," Boon said, when discussing the upcoming title.

Effectively it just delivers the same experience, and over the course of time these games sell less and less and less and less. I think you need to offer something that hasn’t been done before. Like with Injustice, no one has done what we’re doing with the game’s backgrounds, and I think that’s a big part of why it will appeal to fans.

That game looks intriguing so far, and has some solid ideas, that could be expanded on in a next-gen Mortal Kombat sequel. Honestly, I’m of the mind that a new platform, unless radically different, is just going to deliver a product that is prettier. It doesn’t matter what hardware you’re on, it’s up to the developers to find a way to put a fresh twist on the product with the tools available.

And with the PS3 and Xbox 360, there are plenty of tools available.
