New Additions to the Gaming Laptop Market

Less than two weeks after Razer announced the “world’s first true gaming laptop”, MSI have announced two new entries to the market that aren’t a bad answer to “The Blade”.  The next 6 months could see some awesome innovations for people that want to play resource demanding games, while taking the Gautrain.

The GT780DX and the GT683DX both sport the usual features we’ve come to expect at this end of the market, an Intel Core i7-2630QM, full HD displays and Blu-ray drives. MSI however went up a notch and added the Nvidia GeForce GTX 570M which beats out the GT 555M and you can add up to 16GB of DDR3 memory. It is bulkier and heavier than The Blade, it doesn’t sport a 4-inch touchpad and there’s no mention of customizable keys. What MSI did bring to the party was some customizable backlighting – “Normal, Gaming, Wave, Breathing, and Dual Color” in the SteelSeries manufactured keyboard. This is only available for the 780 model. The 683 comes with “a one-of-a-kind LED light show”. Great.

No mention of pricing but what has happened is we’ve seen Alienware, Razer and MSI all release some high end laptops in the past month. Clearly manufacturers believe there’s a market here. With competition comes price reductions and we can also hope for more quality creativity, like 4-inch touchpads.
