Nintendo’s confirmed that there’s a new a Super Mario Bros game coming. A return to classic, sidescrolling 2D magic, the game is headed for Nintendo’s once doomed new handheld, the 3DS.
It’s received the imaginative, and perhaps confusing title of New Super Mario Bros 2 – which is not a new version of Super Mario Bros 2, but rather a sequel to the incredible New Super Mario Bros for the DS, which has sold nearly 30 million units to date.
There’s very little in the way of details about the game available – save for the fact that it’ll be available in the US and Japan as early as this August. Screenshots suggest that it’ll bring back raccoon-tail enabled flight – pretty much as it was in Super Mario Bros 3. Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS, Mario’s last platforming adventure resurrected the leafy power-up, but gave Mario a full Tanooki suit, and nixed his ability to fly.
As terribly milked as the rotund mustachioed plumber is, and as much as I enjoyed Super Mario 3D Land, I’m actually pretty excited for this game. There’s nothing like a good 2D Mario.
