Wrong Neo

Ask anyone who has played it, and they’ll tell you that the upcoming feudal Japan-set hack ‘n slasher Nioh isn’t the kind of game that will hold your hand when it comes to difficulty. That’s not entirely true however. Nioh does hold your hand at times, but it does so after it has hacked it off with a rusty spoon and slapped you in the face with your severed appendage. Look, Nioh ain’t going to be an easy game when it comes out on February 7.

Years in the making, Team Ninja want Nioh to stand the test of time, with its signature difficulty being an example of this. Thanks to fan feedback, the studio felt that they were on the right track with fine-tuning the final release. “We believe ‘streamlined’ is the better expression. We are aware of such voices claiming that by improving controls and camera, the beta felt ‘easy’ to veterans from alpha demo,” game director Fumihiko Yasuda explained to Destructoid.

Nioh is meant to be a masocore (masochistic and hardcore) game so during development, we consciously avoided making the game easy.

Nioh wears its influences proudly, having been clearly inspired by From Software’s Dark Souls and Bloodborne games, as well as a few other western titles when it came to crafting the allure of its masochistic gameplay. “Nioh was influenced by [the] Bloodborne and Souls series,” Yasuda added.

For RPG/hack ‘n slash elements, especially the looting system, we looked to Diablo as well as Borderlands. As for samurai depiction, we took hints from movies such Lone Wolf and Cub by Kenji Misumi and Yojimbo by Akira Kurosawa, as well as numerous Japanese period pieces.

With Nioh having gone gold, the dream project is finally nearing an end. A decade of development, restarts and shifting platforms, all finally coming to a head next month. Guys, hold me. I’m scared. I think Nioh is going to be so difficult that it’s going to murder my pets.
