No offline mode for Diablo III on PC

The PC version of Diablo III is axing both the real and faux money auction houses next year, because, according to Blizzard, they’re negatively impacting the core Diablo experience. Another “feature” of the game that sullies the experience, however, isn’t going away any time soon.

Yes, you’ll still have to be connected to the internet to play Diablo III on PC. Blizzard says it’s because the game was built from the ground up to take advantage of Battle.net, and not because they it’s a form of DRM. No sir, no DRM here.

“We do not have plans to implement an offline mode. While the always-online requirement made the auction house possible, the auction house was never the driving factor in our decision to make the PC version of Diablo 3 require an Internet connection,” a Blizzard representative wrote in a statement to RPS.

“The game was built from the ground up to take full advantage of Battle.net, which provides a number of important benefits, including persistent server-side character saves, a seamless PC multiplayer experience, cheat prevention, and Real ID and BattleTag social features.”

The console versions of Diablo have none of this fluff, and they’re a heck of a lot of fun. Possibly in spite of the lack of connectivity, or possibly because of it.

I had me that same problem. But at least now when I do be gettin’ myself Heart of the Swarm I will not need to install it. Was a big irritation though, I must say meself.

While I enjoyed 1, I doubt I’ll ever get it. When eventually all the expansions & stuff are released in one box it’ll still take a long time to have a really good special, and I’m not a big enough strategy fan to pay a premium for the game. By then I’ll have something else to play too.

Always online isn’t really an issue for me because I have uncapped, I just think it’s stupid for a SP game to insist on it. Having to prove every time I start the game that I didn’t steal it is just insulting.

            September 19, 2013 at 11:15

I agree with SP always online. Pisses me the fudge off. I love strategy games though, so that’s why I enjoy it.

Luckily I too have uncapped. SA’s version of uncapped at least…where you get unlimited internet as long as you don’t use too much of it. Wenches.

Yet with all the crap surrounding Diablo 3 PC, the game still received incredibly generous reviews. Lazygamer gave it 95%. Some even gave it 10/10.

I wonder if Lazygamer and others will give the expansion 110-130% if it does away with many of the problems of the initial game…

We do not have plans to implement an offline DRM mode. While the
always-online DRM requirement made the auction house DRM possible, the auction
house DRM was never the driving factor in our decision to make the DRM PC
version of Diablo 3 require an DRM,” a Blizzard
representative wrote in a statement to RPS.
“The DRM was built from the ground up to take full advantage of Battle.DRM,
which provides a number of important DRM benefits, including persistent
server-side DRM saves, a not so seamless DRM PC multiplayer experience, DRM cheat prevention, and Real DRM and BattleTag DRM features.”
