NRG Overwatch Introduces the San Francisco Shock

It’s an important time for Overwatch with BlizzCon approaching and one of our personal favourite organizations has just announced their rebranded Overwatch team – The San Francisco Shock. NRG, a team with a rather impressive investment portfolio, is one of the few endemic organizations who has signed on to the Overwatch League. While they are an esports organization, NRG is owned by NBA’s Sacramento Kings co-owners Andy Miller and Mark Mastrov.

“There is no better market to establish as the epicenter of esports than San Francisco,” said Andy Miller, Founder and CEO of NRG Esports, parent organization of the San Francisco Shock. “We are so excited to bring a hometown esports team to the region that has been central to the growth of gaming in North America.”

The name, Shock, was an interesting choice by NRG. It symbolizes the seismic activity of the region and their logo, which includes a seismograph, is a silhouette of the famous Bay Ridge which connects the City to the East Bay.

“We took great care to choose a logo and identity that would both represent the attributes and traditions of San Francisco, yet at the same time speak to the future of sports and the Shock’s ambitions to take its place as a fixture next to the Bay Area’s championship sports teams,” said Miller.

NRG has now cemented itself as one of the first teams to field a full roster and team name for the upcoming Overwatch League which begins on January 10th. It’s likely that more teams will begin to surface ahead of BlizzCon, or even at BlizzCon, which begins in November. A close eye will be kept on teams like NRG a Cloud9 who retained their Overwatch presence despite a massive exodus from other esports organizations who weren’t willing to keep at the game without being part of the Overwatch League. There are still a few doubts hanging above the League, but as time goes on and more announcements surface we can slowly begin to jump aboard the hype train.
