Competitive tournament host Online Arena (Orena) has officially announced their first big tournament for the year – The Orena Championships Series (OCS) which features two titles and a R1.7 million prize pool. The competition will see South Africa’s top Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 teams going head-to-head from June until September where the best will compete in a LAN later this year.

From the press release:

“OCS competitors participate across two divisions: the Champions Division and the Premier Division. The OCS Champions Division consists of 16 pre-invited teams (8 for CS:GO and 8 for DOTA2), who will play in a 14-week Online Double Round Robin league, which will provide seedings for the LAN Championships, which will be contested in front of hundreds of fans at the Nu Metro Arena at Emperors Palace in the East of Johannesburg from 21-24 September and 28 September – 1 October. The DOTA2 section will run from 21-24 September, with CS:GO running 28 September – 1 October. The total prize pot for the final is R1.4 million – divided evenly between DOTA2 and CS:GO, with the winning team in each category taking home R300 000 cash. The Online leg of OCS kicks off on 5 June, with details available at champions.orena.com.”

While invited teams will see a lot of the main action, teams can compete in the online ladder season which will see them earning a prize of their own and a spot in the OCS playoffs. The ladder will be known as the OCS Premier Division with a prize pool of R50 000 per title. The announcement continues:

“The OCS Premier Division will be open to all teams (except the 16 Champion Division Teams) and will run from 5 June – 17 September. The division will be run via the Orena ladder system on www.orena.com and will feature a R50 000 prize pool for CS:GO and DOTA2 respectively, shared between the teams finishing from 1st to 3rd place. The top 2 placing teams in the OCS Premier Division will also gain a playoff spot in which they will play against the bottom two teams from the OCS Champions Division after the season ends, at the Nu Metro Arena at Emperors Palace in late October and early November. If the qualifying OCS Premier Division teams manage to beat the bottom two OCS Champions Division teams in the playoff, they win the defeated teams’ places in the OCS Champions Division for the 2018 season. Registration for the OCS Premier Division competition is also available via champions.orena.com.”

Orena has been silent throughout the beginning of the year where we were treated to announcements from companies like Mettlestate, Kwese and DGL (now VS Gaming). Orena’s absence was felt, and we’ve been told this is only the beginning.

It’s not about originality, but about popularity! Especially taking into account the prize money. But yeah, some smaller tournaments for other games would be great, even running adjacent to the large tournaments. Currently, be thankful for the local competitive esport scene growing and getting support, we’re getting there!
