Overwatch’s next hero is Moira

Overwatch Moira (2)

There’s a darkness coming to Overwatch. A force of science, unbound by morality and relentless in a quest for more knowledge. A dangerous new adversary who goes by the name of…Moira. While it’s not exactly the most fearsome of names, Overwatch’s next hero still brings plenty of firepower to the table, as Blizzard revealed their latest character at BlizzCon over the weekend.

Here’s the trailer showing Moira in action:

And via the Overwatch website, here’s a breakdown of a character who essentially plays as a dark mirror to the white hat of Mercy:

Overwatch Moira (1)

BIOTIC GRASP

Using her left hand, Moira expends biotic energy to heal allies in front of her. Her right hand fires a long-range beam weapon that saps enemies’ health, healing Moira and replenishing her biotic energy.

BIOTIC ORB

Moira launches a rebounding biotic sphere; she can choose between a regeneration effect that heals the allies it passes through, or a decay effect that deals damage to enemies.

FADE

Moira quickly teleports a short distance.

COALESCENCE

Moira channels a long-range beam that both heals allies and bypasses barriers to damage her enemies.

So what’s the dealio, yo? If you were looking for backstory, then Moira’s origin is simple enough to understand. Frustrated by those pesky “ethics” thrust upon her research while she was working for Overwatch, Moira struck out on her own and soon found her genius in high demand from organisations such as TALON. “Overwatch held back the pace of scientific discovery for decades,” Moira says in the cinematic below.

They believed my methods were too radical, too controversial.

Interesting note: It appears as if Moira is to thank for Reaper’s deadly spooky arsenal. Take that, fan theory regarding Mercy being the scientist responsible. I like the idea of Moira. I don’t think she’s a villain in the traditional sense of the word, but it’s her pursuit of knowledge at any cost that paints her in a darker light. There’s no set date yet on when Moira will be available within Overwatch, but I’d keep an eye on 2018 for when this scientist starts throwing out some damage.

I watched the Reinhardt backstory clip over the weekend, was quite good. ALMOST suckered me back into the game, so I purposefully slammed the door into my little toe, remembered the pain, and stopped myself from installing the game again

Looks like a fun hero, a good active support.
Its atleast an answer to all these MLG420 dudes playing tracer/genji running around the back line picking off supports, just simply get out of the back line and into the fight.

Her ult going through shields is going to be the real game changer though i think. Thats a massive meta switch up on attack.

I’m going to reserve judgement until I get some hands-on time in the PTR, but she’s an odd pick as the next hero for me. She’s essentially a Zen, Sym mashup, but doesn’t heal as much as Zen or do as much dmg as Sym. Even her ult only does about as much dmg as fully charged Zarya beam, and heals about the same Mercy’s normal healing.

You would think her Fade teleport thingy makes her the perfect support to play on the back line coz she can actually get away when a Genji or Tracer dives it, but playing her on the back line makes no sense since she needs to build her meter for healing by doing dmg.

So exactly what role does she serve? What are the situations that call for her to be picked? She looks very fun to play, but I’m struggling to see her viability.

thought the same about the zen/sym mixup.

I think she’s a decent addition (on paper atleast) most of the current healers are quite passive

Comparatively, shes much more aggressive and active.
Thinking of specific combos, pairing her with lucio, zarya or zen, sounds pretty promising.
Or with group up dive comps and stuff with that aoe heal.
But mostly, her ult hard countering shield strats seems pretty awesome.

The only thing that doesnt bode well for her is Mercy being such a consistant pick.
Although her being a decent damage dealer opens up room for a tri support comp or a revival of the 3 tank meta.
