It may be yet another Fable game where Peter Molyneux will inevitably promise gameplay ideas that he never delivers on fully, but at least the latest Fable game is looking to be a half decent, as the use of the Unreal engine is giving this first person fantasy steampunk game some nice visuals. Gameplay videos show our hero firing off spell after spell at all manner of nasty creatures, but there’s been a very noticeable lack of hand to hand combat so far, and Molyneux has a reason for this.

“We could have done melee weapons”, Molyneux explained, “but the one thing I hate about melee weapons, and guns as well, is that the human brain is encoded to expect recoil from those things.”

"Whenever I swing a sword and I hit something on screen, the visuals and the sound isn’t enough. We could have done what Zelda did well on Twilight Princess, where it doesn’t really matter what you do, what happens on-screen is the best thing. But I wanted people to feel powerful, to feel power, and that’s all about you.The thing about magic is there’s nothing encoded in your mind about how it should feel. So no guns, and no swords."

Fable: The Journey is a Kinect exclusive title that will see players wave their hands around at the screen as they defend themselves against the various creatures of Albion, as you use your motions to shape and manipulate the globules of magic for attack and defence. The journey starts on a horsebound tour of the Kingdom, in what looks set to be an on rails shooter, something that Molyneux claims is completely untrue.
