PlayStation 4 climbs back to the top of the US hardware charts

For two whole months, Nintendo’s Switch stole the top hardware spot in the US. For two months, it was nice to not report that that Sony’s console was the top-selling system in America. Just those two months though, as Nintendo’s Switch has been dethroned by King PlayStation.

The latest NPD report confirms that the PS4 is once again the best-selling console stateside. The Switch is no longer top dog, though it has been credited being the “primary catalyst for hardware spending gains” over the same period last year. Its drop to presumably second place has a lot to do with the fact that the system can be hard to find in the US and many other parts of the world. Using many of the same chips you’d find in Apple’s products, the manufacturer has been locked in a supplies war for its internals, making the system harder to find.

As for games, the top game in May was the excellent Injustice 2, followed by Mario Kart 8. The third spot was picked up by the game that just keeps selling, GTA V. Here are the top 10 selling games in the previous month:

  • Injustice 2
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Prey 2017
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  • Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia
  • NBA 2K17
  • MLB 17: The Show
  • Overwatch

What makes the list interesting and also completely useless is that some games include digital sales, while others don’t. Mario Kart 8, Breath of the Wild, Prey, Fire Emblem and Overwatch do not include data for digital sales, and it’s likely that they would chart higher if they did. Software sales are down 20% over the same period last year, but May 2016 was propped up by two very big releases: DOOM and Uncharted 4.

The two best-selling games for the year overall areboth Ubisoft ones, with Ghost Recon: Wildlands and For Honor taking the tops pots, followed by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in third.

I am planning on buying it with the steam sale that’s coming up, why would I be an idiot for buying a game that I think I might like, Albeit a bit old? Did the same with Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, which I really enjoyed.

I might buy it too depending on the price. I only want it for SP, don’t give a damn about the MP part.

Even a great king deserves a break from the top spot, and like a great leader King Sony graciously allowed that diseased, fat hunchback, X Box I a chance to feel how it feels like to be King. Of course, the King only allowed it for a brief moment, and now the King is back! Ready to rule!

    All Hail King SONY!
