If you’ve recently acquired a PlayStation 4 and it’s just not working properly, you have every right in the world to be pissed. It’s natural to expect the very expensive item you’ve just plonked a wad of cash for to work, so having it throw up error messages instead of beam shiny graphics at your face stings with bitter disappointment. Here’s what might be wrong with your PS4, and ways to fix it.
This is the handy, though hardly comprehensive list of known error codes, and solutions, courtesy of Sony’s troubleshooting page.
- CE-33179-3: Application is not found.
Suggested Action – Retry after the installation is completed. Installation of Add-Ons fails until the installation of application installation is complete. - CE-33991-5: Get the status of the non HTTP_GET_200 in Internet connection.
- Suggested Action – Retry Internet Connection test.
- CE-34788-0: This update file cannot be used. Connect a USB storage device that contains an update file for reinstallation for version 1.50 or later.
Suggested Action – Delete the Update file from the USB storage device, and replace it with the update for reinstallation found from this page. - CE-34878-0: Application has crashed.
Suggested Action – Restart the application in the content area. - NW-31484-0: DNS server not specified.
Suggested Action – Restart the PS4 system. - NW-31367-0: Could not open wireless device.
Suggested Action – Restart the PS4 system. - NW-31453-6: Delayed server response.
Suggested Action – Try Internet connection test at [Settings] > [Network] > [Test Internet Connection]. Check that the internet status is valid. - NW-31194-8: Connection was reset.
Suggested Action – Restart the PS4 system. - E-8200002E: The credit card information is not valid.
Suggested Action – Remove credit card from account, and then re-enter the credit card information. Refer to Add / Remove Billing Information. - E-82000102: Server returned “Unknown Error.”
Suggested Action – Try again. If the error happens on PS Store, close the store and retry. If the error persists, exit store and Sign-out and Sign-in to PSN at [Settings] > [PSN]. - E-TR0L0L0L: Game is not in 1080p at 60 frames per second
Suggested Action – Get a PC, you filthy console peasant.
One of those might not be a real error code from Sony. Maybe. Sony’s PlayStation 4 was released in North America earlier this month, and sees release in much of the rest f the world tomorrow. It’ll be available here in South Africa on December 13…which is just a little over two weeks. Got your pre-orders? Excited?

Always wondered why they don’t just give this information on the screen at the time of the error message? How hard would that really be?

Not entirely sure, may be a liability thing. If someone see’s a recommended fix, and it doesn’t work, might just piss someone off more. Good question, though.

Even my Capitec speed point at the shop, when there’s an error it only gives the code.

Usually you ar never supposed to, well, not NEVER, but you don’t give any technical info with error messages. Like DNS server not specified means nothingn to the common person and most people won’t know what tht means. Not that an error code is any better in all honesty, but the code is used as a reference to further look up th error and troubleshooting solutions. It’s a weird trade-off

The reason for the error would be mentioned in the dump file. Oh, wait…

WTF??
Brian Murphy
November 28, 2013 at 09:02
It means someone tried installing a game and the games add-on, before the original installation completed. And yes, people do this.

And yeah, these are definitely something that shouldn’t be happening. What kind of consoles are these? Oh yeah, wannabe pc’s I bet. On PC, we are used to error messages because windows, but a console? I’ve never had a single error screen ever. This new gen of consoles is looking less and less enticing by the day. 🙁
