Portal 2 sold better on PC

Think PC Gaming is dying? Think again. If anything, thanks to consoles seeming a little underpowered next to their PC brethren, there’s been a bit of a surge in good old mouse and keyboard gaming. While sales of multiplatform console and PC games tend to, internationally at least, be skewed towards consoles – but if sales of Portal 2, one of this year’s most critically acclaimed games are any indication, that might be changing.

"Portal 2 did better on the PC than it did on the consoles," Valve’s Gabe Newell said to Gamasutra, noting that Left 4 Dead, which was a 360 console exclusive, fared better on console. “We can never predict; I mean we just try to build good games and then we tend to be surprised,” he said when asked about the affinity for console regarding the new Counter-Strike.” So you know we don’t try to guess, because we’re not sure what value there is to guessing. We’ve never had a situation where we said, ‘We really, really want to build something that is more popular for the console guys.’

“Because usually we have a bunch of other higher priority problems we want to solve. So we’re glad that people want to play our games wherever they want to play.”

No real indication of how much better Portal 2 did on PC – but it’s something. And with it being one of the top-selling PC games this year, maybe it’ll show other publishers that good games sell well, and that restrictive DRM only prevents sales. Probably not though.
