One of the greatest contributions made to gaming in this generation has definitely got to be services like Xbox Live (Not new but vastly improved) and the Playstation Network, making it simple and easy for gamers to hook up and play games together.
As South Africans, we like to watch our bandwidth due to the ridiculous costs involved and if you have a PS3 and like to play multiplayer games on PSN then be prepared to fork out a little more or forfeit your ability to play games.

According to a report from thesixthaxis.com, certain games are going to require the update to work online.
This means that if you don’t have it then you can’t play them online with your buddies that do. The good news so far is that it looks like the update only affects certain titles, but one of those titles may be your favorite game.
The best idea would just be to make sure you download the update, it will probably make your life easier in the long run, even if it means even more bandwidth costs.

Well so far alot of PSP games that require the firmware update have had it included on the UMD. If Sony is making this mandetory don’t you think they would/could include it on the ‘space stricken’ blu ray disc?

To be fair I did not make any pokes at PSN at all, this is pretty straightforward and a pain in the ass for South Africans.
You make a good point about the updates on the disc, I really hope that they do it but I somehow think that they won’t because no one really cares about bandwidth except us.
At the same time, people need to also stop seeing articles like this as anti-PS3 and more as a heads-up, no one can change the fact that it’s going to happen unfortunately.

I think some games do have the latest firmware on them. I can recall being asked to update with a game a while back, just can’t remember which game. :blush:

i don’t know what the problem is?
i have loads of updates a months between osx and vista and a few other applications, the +-150mb that sony’s fm is weighing in at… is almost pleasant.
i understand most people don’t use their pc’s enough to warrant keeping current with updates, and mainly use their bandwidth up on their consoles… but then again, just calculate how much time you play online then you’ll see where all you bandwidth goes… 2 less hours online play should be more than enough for a firmware update!

Whats more, you can download it using local bandwidth which last I checked costs around R10 per GB.
Therefore, the bandwidth cost is about R1.40.

Yet another article that’s cleverly written to undermine the PS3 without checking facts. The “reporters” on this site are XBox fanboys with hormonal problems. From now on referred to as XJox or XJokes. If you want real gaming news then go to http://www.joystiq.com or http://www.eurogamer.net thats where most of these XJokes get most of their stories from there in any case. Should the update be important for a game to work it will be included with the game. Makes sense? :sick:

Well, honestly the PS3 is getting undermined by its own PR department. What idiocy is this to keep releasing senseless updates ( flash player fix anyone ) in their monthly cycle of PSN updates? Just looking at the example of BF1943 with PSN which is free, yet the subscription based X360 gamers are leading the kill count by a far bigger margin.

you missed my point.
i am in no way saying the psn trumps live, i was merely stating that the psn is in all tense and purposes a fledgling service and has had a remarkable boost in the last year or so.
hence the constant(roughly quarterly?!) upgrades to better the service. i for one do not see that as a bad thing… but thats me.

Two good points that PSN has is its CC local functionality and the ability to download your PSN purchases/trials via local cap.

The issue is that the entry is written very subjectively, and from the point of view that 150MB download is an outrageous amount of bandwidth, which just does not float.
Even in SA, 150MB really is not a lot. Especially when ADSL users can use local bandwidth which costs around R10 per GB.
Nick responded to my post saying that most PSN users wont know about PSN using local bandwidth.
SO TELL THEM, instead of casting the whole thing in a negative light. Sony is only trying to improve its product, it shouldn’t get unfairly lambasted by the media.
The vast majority of PSN users will be connecting through ADSL, and can make use of local bandwidth. That should be the story. That is helpful.

As a PS3 user you do know you cannot download PSN updates via local bandwidth. Only PSN Store items can be downloaded via local bandwidth.

Nah its not that. I burst costs me R250 a month with a 1mb line so its good enough… Lag gets hidious at times..
I wasnt prepare to pay like R1200 or whatever for them to come and install a ADSL line. Iburst was the cheaper option… Only buying a booster nails you

The fix might also be for PSN games which is “online only” and doesn’t have a disc version to include the firmware update on…just a thought…

i wouldn’t call them pointless as there has been a very tangible improvement on the psn as well as the xmb.

Wow, everyone had a field day in here while I wasn’t looking. I am not sure what all the fuss is really about and why the name calling has started again.
150 mb is not a lot of bandwidth, but that isn’t true for everyone. I have gotten complaints because the podcast was 40mb instead of 30mb so take everyone else into account as well. Some dudes have 250mb 3G accounts and so on so it makes a difference.
