Warwick Light, the New Zealand PS3 boss, has been talking to the press about what the PS3 has coming it’s way….
And straight from left field he comes out with a PS3 Digital TV Tuner Add on… you couldn’t make that up. Now while I am sure the people who live in countries with free to air digital TV are happy about this fact. That is the people who don’t currently have a TV are happy about this. However to the rest of us this could possibly be the dumbest accessory ever invented.
I cannot imagine this being an official Sony add on, the market for this device is just to small. I presume the idea is to make the PS3 a PVR but since we have no digital TV signal in SA this would be completely and utterly useless to us…
But then again maybe I am missing something?

Currently we already have digital terrestrial signals in Johannesburg , soon to be rolled out to the rest of the country , so this would actually be a great add-on. You would be able to use the ps3 like a PVR because it would pick up the electronic programme guide from the dtt signal as well , and the quality of the signal is perfect.

Seriously? We actually have that… You got any more information on this?
I may have to change my opinion on this if it can pick up whatever standard we are using,…

Yes , they are in testing phase at the moment and already broadcasting SABC1 ,2 , 3 AND E-TV and some radio channels , i have tested it with a dt tuner pci card (asus my cinema) here in Aukcland park . Not sure if it might be scrambled in future , but for now it is open.

With Telkom & DSTV pushing for IPTV sometime in 2008 this could get interesting.

This ps3 tv tuner allows you to record HD programs and you can pause or go back on live broadcasts, so I would say it is a farely clever add on, even if you already have a tv.
