PS3 well positioned for success – Analyst not so much

PS3 well positioned to take the lead

There is a nice feel good story about the PS3 doing the rounds that appears to be fundamentally flawed.

According to Todd Greenwald, an analyst of some sort, the PS3 now has the upper hand in terms of pricing and exclusives for the first time.

Lets ignore the obvious at first that the PS3 is still the most expensive title around and look at what he is saying. Apparently the new price cut on the 80GB model of the PS3 far outweighs the Microsoft $50 firesale since Microsoft are bringing out that new 60GB model.

Wait… something is wrong there since Sony aren’t dropping the price of the current 80GB model and are in fact just upping the storage of the 40GB model without a price cut, or did I miss something along the way?

Where I do agree with him is that the $399 PS3 is possibly more value for money than the new 60GB 360 at $349. But then again I think Microsoft’s plan to add a bigger hard drive and not cut the price is just insane.

He then goes on to say that the PS3 exclusives are superior to the 360 line up and mentions MGS4, LBP, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, GT5 and God of War 3. The only problem being that Killzone 2 is only coming next year sometime, GT5 in 2010 and God of War 3 has no date. While the 360 side has Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Alan Wake (hopefully), Too Human and a pile of other titles.

While the Todd might have had a point he lost it by getting the base facts wrong and even had his editor happily point out one of his flaws. I wonder how Todd’s employers, Signal Hill, feel about him getting that one wrong?

So is the PS3 better positioned at the moment? Well it’s way better positioned than it was last year but at the moment I don’t think it holds any distinct advantage over the 360. This holiday season is going to be a major decider in the war, if the 360 holds on then the PS3 won’t win the war. I do not however see the 360 really winning either at this point in time.

They had the advantage and didn’t use it properly.

“The only problem being that Killzone 2 is only coming next year sometime”

Let me correct that and be more spesific for you. Next year Feburary. 6 months.

Looking at the list of those exclusives I gotta say the Sony one is far superior imo. Yes GT5 and GOW are still a long way off but lets call spade a spade, while Too Human looks good, there are mixed feeling about it actually being awesome. If you call MGS4 or Fallout “for the fans only” what do you call Fable 2? It’s definitely not a Gears2 or a Halo3. Alan Wake? Well we don’t really know when it will release as well. Just like GOW and GT5. Sorry to say but the only good looking exclusive game MS has to offer for the xmas season is Gears2. The rest looking OK but also, pretty Meh… And coupled too Resistance2 and LBP, Sony will also dish up Killzone2 at about the right time when the post holiday blue evaporates.

Taking all the multi platforms coming up into consideration as well, looking at the Sony catalogue as it is at the moment, looking at the hardware you for you money, I highly doubt consumer will give a damn to dish out the whopping $50 extra.

lol there just isnt enough time in the day. Anyways who cares, both consoles are positioned well, Still the 360 does have the edge, are you honestly gonna sit there and say that the 2 titles you mentioned that are coming out for ps3 this year give it a clear edge… come on kabraal i knew you where an idiot but surely even you can see thats not a stable argument.

I’m glad I don’t have to choose between the line-ups of the PS3 and X360 because they’re both very strong, but I will be surprised if KZ2 meets the February deadline. I’m betting on a delay till July-August at least.

BTW Fable was one of the Xbox’s biggest games – I think it sold more than 2 million – and Fable 2 should also do very well and sell more. It will sell better than Mass Effect or Too Human. Alan Wake will hopefully be out by the end of next year, but for now it’s vapourware as much as GT5

People that make outrages statements that are not based on facts are great. The console war is the best thing to happen to gaming and lets hope both companies keep at it. Without it there would be no-one trying to out do the other and we would land up with cr@p games and 1 console. PS3 rules, no wait X-Box 360! Kudos to those who have both.

A idiot? Why in the world would you think such a thing?

I’m sticking to my guns. You seem to tip toe around. At no stage have I said the 360 will have a disateroues Xmas season, so you can remove that adult diaper. But I really do fail to understand how you come up with the “360 still has the advantage” ATM.

And yes, I do believe having two additional AAA titles during the 3 month holiday season will give one a advantage over the other. Again my opinion.

The xbox is being outsold month on month since the begining of the year. A trend which can fall flat as easily as it started sure. But you can’t honestly tell me that when looking at the release line up mentioned in this article that the 360 will have the “edge” , small as it may be, during the next 6-8 months.

Call me an idiot, behave like the total fucktard you come over as, but I do believe the guy who wrote the article makes a reasonable valid point. Whether his right or wrong, we’ll have to see but I listed my opinion on a blog which allows me to. We all know both are doing good there sport, so please say something useful other than the obvious or kindly, fuck-off.

Gazza said “come on kabraal i knew you where an idiot” and then Kabraal says “please say something useful other than the obvious”.

I couldnt help but giggle at that.

LOL you misunderstand my point, but then I was probably expecting too much by thinking you may understand it,so let me try it this way – you typed down the names of 2 games exclusive to sony’s console coming before next year- LPB and Resistance 2 ok got that, then you proceeded to say these games where better than the xbox offerings due before the end of the year (lets remember you havent played any of these games) so on facts lets take into account theres more big AAA titles coming exclusively for the 360 before the end of the year than the PS3 – See that right there is why i have a problem with youre logic, you obviously can count either.

Ok so this is a bit early in the week for stuff like this but anyway. First off i think the PS3 has the upper hand and the 360 not far off. Ok so at this stage its all coming to software. First you guys must note that with the holiday season comes expensive gifts and so on. These could be HDTV’s. As these become more common which console would they go for. The 360 that requires you to buy a subscription to buy movies and buy MS points and so on…or the PS3 which is known as the more family friendly console(no matter how you look at it>>>PS2) and also BLU-RAY. Then onto games…the 360 has a good lineup, Gears 2 which will obviously be awesome and Fable 2 which should be good. More casual gamers are buying the 360 and thats why i think Fable 2 will not do sooo great. Then you have Too Human which many people say has major problems and that already sets a bad trend for the games future. Then you have the multi-plat which generally do better on 360 but come on. You have FO3, Stars Wars Soul Calibur and Mercenaries 2 [add any else in other comments.] But come on…are those really that great. Ok so they are hyped up and all but can they really make you buy a console. I think not. Maybe FO3 but that is mainly a PC game.

Ok this is a bit long but anyway…my opinion.

Well, you obviously can’t read. And what you’re trying to do is quote me out of context. I don’t know if you’re doing this to make me look bad or because you failed your 2nd grade comprehension tests.

Yes I still the believe the PS3 line-up which includes those two games as well as a Feb Killzone 2 release are looking better than the 360 for_this_period_in_time. Calling me an idiot because that is my opinion gives me the idea your boss gave you a shit time at work today.

I then also proceed to mention the other factors (not just the two games you seem to hammer on). Here, I’ll quote it for you:
“Taking all the multi platforms coming up into consideration as well, looking at the Sony catalogue as it is at the moment, looking at the hardware you get for your money, I highly doubt consumer will give a damn to dish out the whopping $50 extra.”
Never did I say two titles alone were going to give Sony the edge.
Learn to read, learn to comprehend and learn to accept that different people holds different opinion before you start your name calling crusade. 😉

Another prime example of being quoted out of context. Gazza, read up the meaning of this phrase wiki, read my OP again, read what you quoted me on and you might just learn something new today. 😀

New IPs sell consoles, so instead of looking at old franchises we should be looking towards things like Mirrors Edge and Endwar as the Kingmakers.

As for the lineups, my contention with most of the PS3 games are that they’re just typical “core” fodder playing catch up to stuff already released on the 360 with little genre innovation. The only stand out title is LBP and I’ve already come across a few “It’s cute, but not that fun comments”

As for the 360, the focus is completely different and there are a lot of 3rd party exclusives or PC/360 titles that don’t get mentioned in the briefs: Vesperia, Infinite undiscovery, Guilty Gears, Velvet Assassin, just off the top of my head.

The thing with the 360 is the obvious shift to more mainstream/PG games, which I applaud immensely. I love GoW, but I can’t play it with my Kids. Fable and Banjo look awesome.

The sleeper here, and what I reckon could be this years breakout system seller is Live Prime Time. There is nothing like it, and it appeals to a massive audience that would otherwise not ever consider owning a console.

Never thought i’d say this but i almost agree with Doobiwan.

Most the titles mentioned are not console sellers even though they are huge titles. Resistance2, Gears2, Fable2 etc are not going to move consoles at all. New IPs will move consoles and old IPs that have not hit the next gen consoles will also move consoles.

So really the key for both MS and Sony will be things like LBP, Mirror’s Edge, God of War3 (expect a lot of PS2 owners to upgrade for this and GT5), FF etc.

The 360’s big challenge is to get people to move cver to a completely new console Sony only have to convince people it’s time to upgrade.

So far the 360 has done a great job but it seems to me the big push that MS had is no longer there and the sales curve is starting to flatten out quite a bit. They need to keep in the fight 100% of the time or they will eventually get steamrollered.

I still expect Sony to come out as the major winner because they have been doing this successfully for a very long time and understand the market better.

But does it really matter? Just play the games you can on your console and lust after the games you can’t on the other console (or buy it if you can afford it).

I don’t think either console is going to be going away any time soon so really, the “winner” is irrelevant.
