Review of the Gears of War AGASA League

You may or may not have known about the recent Gears of War league that has been happening online. Well koldFUSiON www.thexboxlounge.co.za has put together his review of the league which is quite interesting. I agree with some of his points but not all.

My understanding of the League is that it’s to find the best of the best amongst SA, obviously the cheapest and most cost effective way to do this is across Live, however this comes at a cost and for the most part may have been a bad decision? here are my reasons.

1.) the most obvious reason being there are over 50 000 Xbox’s in SA of which we know 2000 (with regards to MiNeM’s members) of which are online. leaving a large amount of competitors out of the league, this is not a serious issue, although it does limit your selection.

2.) The next issue (this is long, get some coffee), we ALL have issues with is the LAG, due to SA Broadband not being the strongest in the world even when playing locally we still suffer from connection losses, capped accounts, Telkom resets, blah blah, etc. etc. this opens up a world of “bad gameplay” namely our all to famous connection loss, here’s a scenario (one which I was caught on) I got downed in the game with the 30 sec bleed out you pretty much know that if you’re not covered that you are going down. however I was downed for maybe 15 secs and I was about to get taken out when all of a sudden “connection error” problem is my bleed out timer is still counting down, I managed to get up while my connection error was still happening while my enemy is staring me in the face… ? fair?

Continued after the break….

LAG also incorporate what we have aptly dubbed “Host Advantage/HP” Host advantage is an incredible weapon in a league match and is normally given to the strongest player in your team for obvious reasons. However what I don’t see as “fair” and not a true reflection of “skill” is when teams are able to sit on the same 4Meg line which now associates in all of them gaining access to Host Advantage. now giving them an incredibly unfair advantage.
Another problem comes in with exactly the opposite, due to the fact that some of us (understandably) cannot afford the 1-4meg ADSL lines, thus causing players to teleport around the map or in different locations, some players have taken advantage of this and know how to handle it however this doesn’t only affect the player on the slower line it also affects players on faster lines, one such instance is the “connection error” where players are moving into their position a connection error occurs and moves players to different locations on the map but not slightly but to the other side of the map. which completely throws off strategy.

3.) the players, so far through out the league I have had the privilage of playing some guys who are competitive but respectiful, and I understand that there’s a certain amount of trash talk allowed but there is a line and other people start to cross it don’t expect me or anyone else to show you any respect. you may think it’s “cool” to get everyone wound up with insults but you will soon find that you will have no-one to play with.

4.) my last complaint is the length of the League it has been exhausting on both players and their lines. with regards to boosting accounts, which costs more money
So by know you must think me a real sore looser, that’s ok I am a little and we do have some super talented players in the League. and it was one hell of an experience and for the most part I did enjoy myself.

What I hope to see next year, since this is a “Big deal LAN” is possibly instead of teams being created but rather teams playing at a provincial level, i.e. guys in JHB will make a team and guys in CPT will make a team, they’ll compete at a venue (not online) and the top 2 teams from each province will the move to the Final’s for SA.
However this is quite a lot more work. it’s something I’d like to see happen though

So did you make it to the end in one piece 😉

Personally I didn’t enjoy the league to much, I play Gears for fun and I found this brought about a lot of negativity and aggression that wasn’t present before. The finals are coming up soon and then hopefully after that we can get back to playing Gears for fun… until rAge that is 🙂

Drift, so true… I am really hoping rAge is more about having fun and having some beers and less about who wins what and how l33t they are..

Tsk tsk tsk. C’mon, guys, you realise that, by definition, anything that becomes competition elevates to a level above just play-play, right 😀 ? It’s just the nature of, well, the world…
