Rumour: Duke Nukem Never – 3D Realms Shut Down?

As most of you know, 3D Realms has been working on the fourth installment of the Duke Nukem series, ironically titled Forever, for a massive 13 years now. The scary thing is that I remember the day that 3D Realms announced that they were going to be moving over from the Quake 2 Engine to the, at that stage, brand spanking new Unreal Engine.

Well, here comes some news that, if proven true, will be a big shame indeed. Shacknews is reporting that “a very reliable source” has confirmed that 3D Realms has been shut down.

More after the jump.

According to the source, it was due to a funding problem and employees have already been let go. If this is true then Duke Nukem Forever may very well never see the light of day.

With so much time spent on the game though, and some leaked footage of it late last year, I am sure that there must be enough finished code there to tempt another company into buying the license up and finishing the game off themselves.

Let’s not forget that this is a rumour though, and nothing has been confirmed, so let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that after 13 years, the game still gets to see the light of day.

[Lazy Update: This rumour is pretty much confirmed now with the majority of the gaming industry reporting on it. From what I can see 3D Realms is no more but Apogee is still going which means that The Duke is still coming to a PSP and iPhone near you later this year. Duke Nukem Forever mind you may never return]

@Chain, is someone picks it up it’s a sure bet they’ll rush it to completion and it will suck badly.

Never was a Duke Nukem fan anyways. that will explain why they never really revealed the process of the game aswell. 13 years HA! they had to be constantly changing engines just to keep up
