Rumour: Valve files point towards a new Source engine, is Half-Life 3 far behind?

Half-Life 3 happens to be harder to find than Wally in that banned version of his book, Where’s Wally: Drug Enhanced Psychedelic Edition. For years now, we’ve been wondering where and when the game would appear, with developer Valve being vague on the subject. But apparently, a third Half Life might only appear when Valve releases a new graphical engine, to better accommodate their vision. And clues point towards that engine actually existing.

If you happen to have Valve’s Source Filmmaker installed on your PC, you can dig up some code that refers to an engine, labelled “Source 2”.  Lines of code that Valvetime.net uncovered, revealed the following code that will be included in the SFM at a later date:

Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn’t doesn’t exist, assume ‘Source’, otherwise invalid — assume next-gen ‘Source 2’.

The Source engine has been one hell of a fantastic engine so far, as it has been adapted for several games, and has upgraded itself continually since 2004. Not even Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed can boast engines that old, and they’re already starting to book rooms in the retirement village for outdated graphical engines.

With a newer, bigger engine with which to code, that could mean that Valve will finally be working on a new episode in the Half-Life universe, or even a brand new, official third game.  Even better though, is what this engine could do for other titles, and the mega-popular SFM kit, which has proven to be a capable and glorious way to make some zany, artistic or even serious films.

If it works on your PC though, as I can’t even get the damn thing to load, before it crashes. Adding further fuel to the rumour fires, is this quote from the Valve website, regarding the SFM;

We don’t like to brag, but Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there. And it’s about to get even better.

Take this news with a pinch of salt, but a new Valve Engine can only spell good things for the future of gaming.
