Ryse: Son of Rome has brutal PC Requirements

Ryse-Son-of-Rome-3

Last month the Xbox One lost another exclusive, after the struggling Crytek revealed that Ryse: Son of Rome would be making its way to PC later this year. Ryse isn’t known for being a deeply engrossing title, but it is probably the most visually stunning title on the Xbox One. That makes me wonder what type of hardware is needed to get it running smoothly on PC. According to Steam, it’s going to take a lot.

Ryse went up for pre-order yesterday on Steam, revealing not only the PC requirements but also the price. Crytek is thankfully hoping PC players will shell out full price for their port, with Ryse currently priced at $40. That includes all the previously released DLC, as well as the game’s soundtrack for those who pre-order.

But what’s really catching everyone’s attention is the requirements. You’ve got your usual Minimum and Recommended, but if you look closely at the you might see something odd.

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows Vista SP1, Windows 7 or Windows 8 (64bit)
  • Processor: Intel Dual-Core 2.8 GHz/ AMD Dual-Core 3.2 GHz or better
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: DirectX 11 graphics card with 1 GB video RAM
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Hard Drive: 26 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectX compatible Sound Card with latest drivers

Recommended:

  • OS: Windows Vista SP1, Windows 7 or Windows 8 (64bit)
  • Processor: Intel Quad-Core or AMD Octo-Core
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: DirectX 11 graphics card with 4 GB video RAM
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Hard Drive: 26 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectX compatible Sound Card with latest drivers

A GPU with 4GB of VRAM is recommended? Hands up how many of you actually meet that? Oh, not many? Not any? That’s what I thought.

What the requirements page fails to state is that the recommended specifications are basically what it’s going to take to run Ryse at 4K. That’s the biggest change Crytek has introduced with the port, allowing you to really max out the resolution. It makes sense then that you’d need so much visual processing power to achieve that, but I’m guessing you won’t even need half for standard HD.

It’s either that, or Ryse’s weird boob physics are really taxing on PC hardware. The game is out on October 10th, placing it in and around a month with far more interesting, and newer, titles to steal your attention.

  1. Yeah Im sure 4GB will only be for 4k as you say, Im sure 2GB will be plenty for 1080.

Yeah, but my wife and buy old, good cars. So for us, yeah. Just bought a “new” car two weeks ago, for R45K, which is just a bit more than the IT Guy spent on his PC, 4 TB hardisk and all

I buy a “new” car every year. I also keep in the 50-70k bracket.
The value of the car doesn’t depreciate much in that price range, so I don’t lose money per se

But what brands do you buy? We (me) love merc, truly awesome. Comfortable, not sporty, but a bit of power when you want it. I like that. Why buy new? Car payment? Nah.

That’s an understatement. I had the v6, 155kw of awesomeness (mine wasn’t stock). Used to pull Golf 5 GTi’s robot to robot. I miss that car :(. Just the spares are k@k expensive. But still, alot of car for little money

Agreed. Those V6’s were the shiz man. I always wanted one, but always ended up with an Asian car instead.

At the same time as the Alfa I also had a Mazda MX6. Also a v6. Spent a small fortune restoring that car. Had a motor imported etc. Stunning car for it’s age

I’m looking for a real classic now.
A guy in the plein had a Mercury Cougar rolling chassis he wanted to sell for 50k. But when he realized how scare it was he got very greedy very quickly.
My uncle had a Pontiac Fire-am when I grew up. I thought I was going to own it one day, but he ended up selling it to Johan Rupert for his car museum last year 🙁

I so badly want a dual-screen setup. The previous owner of the house I bought left their 40″ tv behind, but that seems like overkill 😉

          • Spaffy

            September 5, 2014 at 09:38

            I use a 40″ as my monitor.
With a wireless keyboard and mouse.
It’s fine for casual play, doesn’t work so well for online though

          • Sith JJ

            September 5, 2014 at 09:40

My problem is that I’ll have to put it on the desk, there’s no space on the wall. I play a lot of strategy games, so I enjoy watching something while I’m playing a casual game (hence the need for two screens)

          • Brady miaau

            September 5, 2014 at 09:42

Ah, I play Civ V at night on my laptop, in the TV room on a small table (ok, our 2nd dining room at the back of the TV room) and watch TV like that, you are right about that

          • Sith JJ

            September 5, 2014 at 09:43

Playing come Civ (or most turn based strategy) and watching TV is what Fridays are all about. 😉

            September 5, 2014 at 09:46

Indeed, I like that. Sometimes Master of Orion 2. Or Galciv. But I always come back to Civ

I tried that with Starcraft 2, play on TV. Found it very difficult somehow, it seems as if the mouse and keyboard were too “far” away or something and I kept looking down and up, so hurt neck is a risk too. (do not tell me to learn the keys, I touch type)

          • Sith JJ

            September 5, 2014 at 09:42

I think strategy games become an issue if you’re not sitting right in front of the screen.

No. Not at all. I am saying currently. 1080p is just fine for now. 4K is enthusiast and doesn’t need to be in everyone’s living room.

Once 4K capable devices come down in price to current 1080p standards then 4K will be fine.

            It’s not attitude, it’s realism

Its over the top but awsone, but I agree its just too expensive for what you get at the moment. Maybe in 3 years is will be realisitc, but by then we will all have VR sets strapped to our heads.

The specs aren’t actually that outrageous if you consider it all.

The 4GB video ram is a real laugh however. That’s some seriously bad optomising going on there.

I am pretty sure that a DX11 card with 1 – 2 GB Vram will be able to run it at ultra on 1080p or at least close. Most definitely will be able to run it as good if not better at the same visual quality of the XBox

A lot of these guys have been letting the games almost solely run off the gfx cards, using less RAM. There’s reasons to it (so my engineer friend tells me), but I can’t remember what it was.

VRam is much, much faster than DDR3 ram. GFX card Ram is GDDR5 and is extremely fast.

The problem is the cost of GDDR ram. Hence why the more VRam a GFX card has the more expensive it becomes.

Those system requirements are pretty standard if you look at games like, Crysis 3 and BF4, but the 4GB requirement is just for 4k gaming, a graphics card with 1gb or 2gb should run this just fine on 1080p, from what I have seen the game looks fun despite the reviews being so cruel.

My question here, is Ryse worth it? I remember a lot of horrid reviews for the game when it first came out, Metacritic seems to place it at 60/100 now though. running 780ti with 570 for physX, so will be interesting to see how it holds up.
