Skyrim’s coming on just one Xbox 360 disc

There’s an increasing trend, thanks to Microsoft’s choice to use the old DVD format for its disc storage, for games on the Xbox 360 to ship on multiple discs. This is especially true of sprawling, longer games like Mass Effect 2, L.A Noire and id’s upcoming post-apocalyptic shooter RAGE.

One such epic wont be shipping on multiple discs, and that epic is Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

“Just how many Xbox 360 discs will it take to hold all of Skyrim?” Ripten asked Skyrim’s Art director Matt Carofano at PAX this weekend.  Just the one. The single disc 360 version was double confirmed by Senior Community Manager Matt Grandstaff  who said “There will only be 1 disc for Skyrim,” adding that it uses “most of the DVD space.” Not bad at all, considering the game will potentially give players hundreds and hundreds of hours of gameplay. The last Elder Scrolls, Oblivion, also came on just one Xbox 360 disc, but that had just a handful of voice actors. Skyrim’s been confirmed to have over 70.

That’s either a big win for Bethesda’s compression team, or the cue for rapid PlayStation fanboys to call out the 360 as the reason why Skyrim’s not even more amazing.
