Have you had a hankering lately for horrifically gruesome killshots that slowly broadcast just how much damage a well-placed 303 calibre bullet can inflict on the human body? Well then, A: You should go seek some qualified medical help you sick person you and B: Good news! Sniper Elite is returning this year, in a fourth instalment of the popular and historically inaccurate shooter.

Developer Rebellion announced Sniper Elite 4, which will see series regular Karl Fairburne return yet again to see just how many Nazi and Axis testicles he can penetrate with some lead injections at high velocity. Set in scenic Italy, Fairburne joins the Italian resistance to put an end to the regime of dictator Benito Mussolini. So guess who’s getting his own pre-order DLC mission, I’d wager.

“If his mission fails, there will be no Operation Overlord, no D-Day landing, and no victory in Europe,” Rebellion said in their Sniper Elite 4 press release. Rebellion is also aiming for some high fidelity on this entry in the series, which they’ve described as being designed “without the constraints” of last-generation hardware and will allow them to create a “definitive World War II shooter”. So 1080 peas, and 60 frames per second during those vicious killcam shots then.

Game locations will include the usual Nazi factories, Mediterranean coastal towns and mountain monasteries in which to repent with bullets. Rebellion also said that the new maps will be “many times the size” of those in Sniper Elite III. I’ve got a soft spot for the Sniper Elite series. They’re like extended X-Ray sequences from Mortal Kombat X, but surprisingly competent outside of that gimmick.

Sniper Elite three made some much-needed improvements to the gameplay of being away from a sniper’s nest, giving Fairburne some proper mobility to create some ambushes and escape an entire platoon of ticked-off Nazis who were on the way to give him a proper kicking.

So very happy about this! Love these games, they make me feel like I can shoot… (Which I actually can, but not at sniper level)
