Sony confirms you will be charged to play online

Yesterday I posted up about that PSN Pass image that was found on a Resistance 3 PS3 Box and wondered what it could actually mean.

My guess was that it was similar to the EA Project Ten Dollar or the MK online pass where a game includes the ability to play online when you buy it new but that one time code is then utilised and if you pick it up second hand you will then need to pay for the right to play online.

Well much to eXpZA‘s surprise the image wasn’t doctored and now Sony has come out and announced that a PSN Pass is exactly what I presumed it would be.

In Sony’s own words

We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities,

This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.

This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.

So that clears that up then, despite previously promising that they would never charge for online multiplayer they have now decided it’s actually a rather good idea and will be doing so moving forward.

I wonder how long it’s going to take before they find a reason to include standard multiplayer in their PSN+ offering?

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Sony has done this as they have previously done it on some PSP titles but it is the first time they are dragging the PS3 into it and given it a standard name and policy.
