Questioned over what lessons the company has learned from Nintendo’s fall from handheld grace with its 3DS, SCEE senior group studio director Mick Hocking, ha said that poor 3D implementation leads to consumer disinterest.

“I wouldn’t comment directly on 3DS,” he said so as to not enter a public mudslinging contest “but I think what we’ve seen over the last 12 months is a strong correlation between good-quality 3D content and great response from our fan base.”

“The opposite is also true,” he continued “When people see 3D that doesn’t work very well, or content that isn’t very compelling, I think quite naturally they’re not as interested in it.” The difference in approaches, says hocking, is that the 3DS pushes for the inclusion of 3D in every game, while Sony doesn’t. “A message we’ve been giving to all of our PS3 developers is add 3D where it adds something to the game. It’s not a tickbox we want on all the game boxes; we want 3D to add to the experience, whether it’s enhancing a racing experience or creating greater immersion in Killzone or Uncharted 3,” he said.

I’m still wholly unconvinced of the benefits of 3D gaming. Though it’s “cool,” I haven’t played a single game where the 3D has enhanced the experience to the point where playing in 2D would be gimped. As for the 3DS? Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 will be fantastic, in 3D or not.
