Sony – Talking smack like it’s 2006

Not content with just hyping their games, Sony seem to be reverting back to pre-PS3 launch levels of smack talking. They also seem to be imbibing a bit of the electric kool-aid, with Sony Computer Entertaining President Kaz Hirai waxing delusional. In an interview with Official Playstation magazine, the SCE front-man said – despite being firmly in last place – “I’d like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry.”

Full details of lunacy after the jump

He then went on to take swipes at the competition;

“ It’s difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don’t look at their console as being competitors. They’re a different world and we operate in our world — that’s kind of the way I look at things…

And with the Xbox —

again, I can’t come up with one word to fit. You need a word that describes something that lacks longevity… Last time I checked, they’ve never had a console that’s been on the market for more than four or five years and we’ve committed to a ten year life cycle, so you do the math…

And unless things go really bad, there’s no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base.?”

I’m of the opinion that the PS3 is a mighty fine console indeed – but these snide, unwarranted comments from Sony big wigs only show a lack of decorum and class. It’s almost as if they’re on the defensive, like a caged animal. Perhaps Sony believe that if they keep reaffirming that they’re winners, it’ll come true?

To reiterate : Dear Sony, Would you please shut up?

    No, no. I keep my biases in check – My primary reason for having cause for complaint is that Kaz seems to have lost his mind. Maybe he’s been getting PR lessons from Ken Kuturagi, who also lost his mind and started spewing nonsensical garbage. Maybe it’s something in the Ramen…because to be honest, I think Shigeru Miyamoto may also be succumbing to dementia. Wii Music? Seriously?

    Bottom line is that this is PR speak. It cannot be proven either true or false. So there is no reason to tell him to shut up.
