Sony to cut PS3 price in Japan, also release 40Gb

Sony has announced that it is going to be cutting the price of its existing PS3 models in Japan this November by 10%. They are also going to be releasing the newly announced 40Gb in Japan on November the 11th.

The new lineup will be as follows

60GB – $470
40GB – $340
20GB – $385

Does something look strange to you? The 20 GB with 2 extra USB’s and backwards compatibility will cost $45 more than the model with 20GB extra hard drive space. Is the Backwards compatibility worth $45? We’ll have to wait and see but I would think the 20GB model is now on its last legs in Japan.

This is really making a mess & mockery of all the Sony PS3 models out there. Didnt they phase out the 20GB model prior to the EU launch and now they are re-launching it again?

    What a balls up!

@Ruslan, not quite the 20Gb model has always been available in Japan.

How many models does the ps3 have and how many does the xbox have?
Everyone is always talking about the ps3 having so many models, well the xbox has three right?? now what about the disk tray fix, then the falcon model, then added cooling model, gfx model? jasper model? seems like xbox has a whole bunch more to me.

@Abev, when looking at official SKU’s you have the following

    Xbox 360 Core
    Xbox 360 Premium
    Xbox 360 Elite
Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition (limited)

    The PS3 has
    PS3 20Gb (Japan only)
    PS3 40GB (worldwide)
PS3 60GB with BC chip (USA)
PS3 60GB with no BC chip (PAL Areas)
    PS3 80GB (Korea and Asia)
    (Rumoured 160Gb model)

So yeah they are similar, however the problem is what is different between the models, the 360 only seems officially changes the hard drive size and colur while the PS3 drops some functions (WiFi (20gb) Memory card reader and USB ports (40GB))…

Come on lazy, the xbox is just as bad and you know it. My point concerning all the “modded” xbox consoles is def valid.

@Abev, sorry but I don’t think your point is valid. The xbox 360 is constantly being updated to improve reliability (which is really needed) and to cut costs, however no functionality is ever removed.

The PS3 has different models with different functionality. Only some of them have built in WiFi and Card Readers. All the 360’s don’t have WiFi or card readers 😉

    See consistency

My point was that as usual your news reflects ps3 in a bad light, and you never post the bad news on the xbox front, its creating a one sided view of the console war which is biased and untrue.

So why cut BC which is one of the best selling points of ANY next-gen console plus ask gamers to pay up $45 to have it whilst its supposed to be a software solution for the emulation to work?

I am still confused as to how is Sony exactly trying to entice gamers to their PS3 while cutting back on a +2000 gaming library of PS3 games?

@ abev, as usual? What is that suppose to mean? Unless you have selective reading, you obviously miss the posts with the Lazy actually supporting the PS3 and reporting it in a good light. Just a quick bit of advice, check your facts before you make accusations. If this was the states your ass would be sued.

Also the term model refers to an SKU, not its revisions. The Xbox 360 has undergone (across all SKUs) 4 revisions. Oh and the PS3 has also undergone revisions.

Also to put this in another light take an Intel Core 2 Duo E6700. Its one model right? Now it undergoes revisions. Now if what you are implying by saying each revision is a new model then Intel would have 15 “models” of the E6700. A bit much if you ask me.

Xennox you dont even know which way is up buddy!
All I ask is that the news on this site remains unbiased on all fronts, if there is bad ps3 news then show it(check) if there is good ps3 news then show it (check), if there is good xbox news then show it (check) and if there is bad xbox news then show it too (no check).
Gavin knows that I am a big fan of his site and I love coming here to see the latest gaming news as I feel that his news is trust worthy, however he also knows that I feel he is sometimes xbox biased.

Oh and on the BC I totally agree its a retarded move, Im just glad I got a ps3 before they decided to do this.

@Abev, I do try remain unbiased but the facts still point to the 360 being a better gaming machine right this minute. If it makes you feel better though I am looking for some PS3 writers at the moment to scour the internet for good PS3 news 😉
