Yesterday Sony made that huge “Global Announcement†that had been hyped up over the past couple of days and we didn’t post anything about it.
Why? Well because it was incredibly boring and unimportant really. The big announcement was that the PS2’s price in America has been cut to $99, granted that’s better than an announcement about Pac-Man but really not very exciting in the bigger scheme of things.
However Sony didn’t seem to fully understand the true meaning of the word global as Sony UK has already announced that they are not dropping the price and I suspect that a lot of countries are not going to be following this price drop thanks to the current economic crisis. Luckily for us though it seems like we are getting a R300 drop on our side to bring the RRP to R1499…Â
In my mind the PS2 has had it’s day and I don’t think I would buy another one unless they drop it to around R500.

it maybe a boring announcement, but you have to remember that this is world’s best selling console.
and at that price point, it’ll probably earn sony a few more bob.

I’d buy a PS2 for $99. R1499 is too expensive, R999 is a good price for SA.

What is funny is that it was at R1499 at one stage, in fact I had to get a few quotes for my insurance and a few places came in at R1499 already and that was in Jan.
Decided I didn’t really want a PS2 again and upgraded my Graphics card further ;-D

Tempting. Seeing that there is a whole bunch of nifty
games out in the Platinum collection. Will have to
sleep on it.

Let me rephrase that. It would be tempting at $99.
R1499 isn’t really enough of a price drop for me.

Can anyone remember what the PS1’s price was. I am sure I paid around R1000.00 at release.

If it was R 999 over here it would be tempting.
But it won’t be

I rather get a 9600GT for that price or a Xbox 360 Arcade with HDMI for R800 more

Kotaku, N4G and fanboy blogs hyped the announcement, not Sony. Sony just told Kotaku it would have an announcement on Tuesday – it never said “THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BIGGEST PS3 ANNOUNCEMENT EVER GUYS!!!!!” People who were disappointed only had their own stupid fanboy heads to blame.
