South Africa Software Sales Figures – End of 2007

Once again www.Take2.co.za has come to the party and very kindly released its software sales percentages from the beginning of November to the end of December 2007.

Unfortunately all our retailers seem to be under some embargo which doesn’t allow them to release sales numbers and our distributors don’t seem to want to either. However I have it under good authority that Take2 is one of the biggest gaming retailers in the country and therefore gives us a great view of the South African buying patterns.

So to the numbers. (Change % is compared to the previous results)

1. PC Games – 53.9% (+0.9%)
2. PS2 – 18.2% (-4.7%)
3. Xbox 360 – 8.4% (-0.7%)
4. PS3 – 7.0% (+4.7%)
5. PSP – 6.2% (-0.4%)
6. Wii – 3.8% (+2.4%)
7. DS – 2.5% (-0.5%)

So those are some interesting numbers, the country is still very much a PC gaming country with the next gen consoles all falling quite far behind.

The 360 is the only next gen console to lose ground since the previous report and the PS3 has easily been the biggest winner. I think it is quite possible that the PS3 will overtake the 360 when we look back at Q1 in April this year.

Again a huge thanks to Renier and Take2 for providing this information. For all you Xbox 360 Live gamers make sure you use Take2 for all your subscriptions and Microsoft points.

For you PS3 guys, come on I am sure you can overtake the 360 if you just buy some more software in the next 3 months from Take2 😉

It’s interesting to see what the sales distribution percentages are but it would be much better if the distributors, instead of retailers, could give us the same info in terms of Units and Rands instead.

Yeah I know.. I am busy discussing the possibility of that with some companies now… You won’t believe how tight lipped they are about this

I am really not surprised by the figures relating the next-
gens. With all the returns the 360 has been expieriencing
with the faults, I myself have exchange it 3 times this year

The other contributing factor is MS’ inability to roll out
Live in SA. PS3 players play for a we pay through the nose
for the service and even so not all of the content is there
    for SA users to access.

PS3 will undoubtabely overtake the 360 and even the Wii,
I am considering buying a PS3 to avoid to pain in the butt
that owing a 360 brings. Like all console owners we want
peace of mind when it comes ones console.
