South African Nationals – Review

I have just returned from the AGASA finals being held at Olympic house…. Where they were running the finals for Gears of War, PGR3 and Dead or Alive 4…

Unfortunately I could not stay for the PGR finals but I will get back to you with all the results from that.

The new DOA4 South African champion is none other than Draeka. For the people who know about Draeka this is no suprise as he is easily the best player in the country, however he didn’t get a chance to prove it today because not a single person arrived to compete against him. It is disgusting really that he organised to get himself up to Johannesburg from Durban, all at his own costs, and then the other players just didn’t arrive after promising they would. If you are one of those people then you have really let the gaming community down with your atrocious behaviour.

[Update] It seem that one player did arrive later due to a mixup with the timings. A big thanks to Aequitus for arriving and competing and congratulations on the silver medal.

On to happier things. The Gears of War finals was fought out between Desperate Housewives (DHW), Hi-5, Team Tigon and WatchYaHead…

First up was DHW and Hi-5, in the first round DHW annihilated Hi-5 as was to be expected, however things quickly changed with Hi-5 sticking their best bear paw out and fighting back to win the match. So the first shock of the day happened in the first round. Next up was Hi-5 vs Team Tigon (who with a player missing had to sub in an extra from Capital Punishment… thanks Squirrely). I was expecting Hi-5 to take this one and yet again I was proven wrong with Tigon walking out the victors.

[Update] It seems that I had it wrong… Hi-5 played Tigon first and then DHW… however I think the rest is accurate.

Then DHW took on Team Tigon and were soundly beaten. Yes that’s right DHW had now lost both their opening games and where pretty much out of contention. Then up to the plate stepped WatchYaHead.

WYH vs Hi-5… In the first match (first to 3) Hi-5 managed 1 kill in all three rounds. They fought back valiantly but were just outclassed. WYH then roundly defeated Team Tigon as well. I have to be honest I cannot remember what happened exactly between Team Tigon and Hi-5 but Team Tigon did win the match…

WYH then finished off the morning by edging out DHW… So our new South African Gears of War champions are WatchYaHead….

This would be the same team that has not lost a single game in the entire AGASA league, watching them first hand was an experience. They are easily the best clan in the country and thoroughly deserve their gold medals. They deserve to be heading to the WCG championships to proudly represent our country and they would do well as well, but no South African company thinks supporting them is worth it… The cost is R35 000 per person so you are looking at R140 000 (thanks Pode) for the entire clan… I feel Microsoft should really be stepping up to the plate here but unfortunately they haven’t… There still is time though.

All in all in was a great morning and nice to meet the people we play against online.. I have a ton of photo’s which I will upload this evening. A huge congratulations to WatchYaHead and Dreaka…. and MiNeM from www.xbox-360.co.za for organising it all…

Nice write up. I must admit though, that this: “First up was DHW and Hi-5, in the first round DHW annihilated Hi-5 as was to be expected”, as was to be expected by you 😀 ! Hi-5 is good, choked under pressure they did (sorry, Jut King), but I definitely rated them as worthy competitors for anybody there…

@Pillsbury, I was not trying to be disrespectful to Hi5… they are obviously very good but a large chunk of the community thought DHW would take the gold medal…

and I got some pictures of you smiling like a proud dad.. will put them up soon 😉

Nice. Lazy, if you have a lot of photos why not create a flickr album for ’em? You’re probably also gonna have more pics once rAge comes round so maybe better to have them nice organised, no?

sorry… let me say it again without the typo.

    This is what you said:

“First up was DHW and Hi-5, in the first round DHW annihilated Hi-5 as was to be expected”

DHW did not play Hi-5 in the first game, Tigon played against Hi-5 in the first game. and Hi-5 did beat DHW in our game that we played against them.

    Just wanted to clarify that.
