Street Fighter’s not the only franchise to be celebrating its 25th birthday. This weekend, Square Enix celebrated the 25th anniversary of its enduring Final Fantasy series. We don’t have a lengthy retrospective of the series like we did with street fighter, because there’s not enough space on the whole internet for that. anyway, Square took the opportunity to announce a bunch of Final Fantasy related stuff…and also troll the hell out of the audience.

They did that, by announcing a Final Fantasy Dating Sim. If you;re unaware, dating sims are some of the most ludicrously popular types of games in Japan; where lonely Japanese males get to digitally interact with virtual girls who look like they’re twelve, doing all the completely pointless, mindless thing you do while dating, like small talk and dinner and trying not to stare at breasts while you sip from your glass. From Final Fantasy Type-0 and Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday director Hajime Tabata, concept art and character profiles for the dating game were shown – drawing mixed reactions from the crowd.

With the ludicrously overwrought (and therefore completely plausible) title of Final Fantasy: Suzaku Magic Institution Peristylium ~ Oh no! I’m in Love With the Crystal’s Divine Guardian, the game turned out to be little more than an elaborate hoax; it’s not a real thing. Or at least, it isn’t yet.

You can see more on Andriasang. while it’s awesome to see the company show that it does have a sense of humour, I’m not entirely sure Square should be toying with its fanbase – especially now that they’ve announced the third entry in to the final Fantasy XIII saga, with a new “Lightning” focused game – with not a mention of the game people actually want, Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

If it did become a reality, I very much doubt the Final Fantasy Dating sim would come to the west – but would you want it?
