Steam Economy to expand beyond trading

Valve has announced that their new initiative, the Steam Community Market, has now gone into beta. Soon you will be able to trade more than items –  in more games than just Team Fortress 2.

So what’s all this community market stuff about? Well, simply put, you’ll be able to buy and sell in-game items with your Steam Wallet Funds i.e. with your money. This whole idea is based around the trading feature in Team Fortress 2 which has been so popular that according to Tony Paloma, Valve software engineer, there have been over half a million trades a week. Just imagine how much cash that would be?

The official Steam Community Market page says that “The Community Market is designed to expand the Steam Economy beyond trading,” which is really awesome, since you could make money from items you own, to buy items you really want. Like Diablo III’s real-money market, only functional.

It’s great to see Valve go way beyond just digital distribution of games and innovating, with the Big Picture and Greenlight and the works.

How can you be a part of this? Join this group and read this FAQ and you’ll be sorted.
