Rotten Tomatoes, one of the internet’s premier film review sites have awarded their Annual Golden Tomato Awards, honouring the best and worst films of 2009.
Wouldn’t you just know it, but a video game adaptation has pipped the nod as the worst film of the year – and I’m not surprised that it’s Street Fighter : the Legend of Chun Li.
If you haven’t seen it, save your time – you’re better off spending that hour and a half picking out gunk from your toenails or scratching around your bellybutton for lint. It almost made my brain bleed, and I’m pretty certain I was multitudes of orders dumber afterwards.
By comparison, it makes the first Street Fighter film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme (“I’m going to keeck that sonofabeesh Bison’s ass so HORD… that the next Bison wanna-be isssgonna feel itâ€) seem like something that should be playing at the Cinema Nouveau. That was at least a bit of campy fun, as opposed to pure drivel. Not even Kristin Kreuk’s prettiness could make her wooden delivery – eclipsing even the most mahogany performance Keanu Reeves has managed – in any way bearable.
But enough of my ranting, here’s what Rotten tomatoes had to say :
The combination of a shallow plot and miscast performers renders Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li a perfectly forgettable video game adaptation.
I think they were far too kind. For reference, the top movies to have gotten wide cinematic releases were Disney Pixar’s UP! and Star Trek.
