SURPRISE

Another year, another Call of Duty game. And another round of articles from a surprisingly handsome hack claiming that this will be the year that Call of Duty finally falls beneath the feet of another competitor. And every year, Activision’s premiere military shooter franchise/Michael Bay movie simulator manages to prove everyone wrong.

2016 was no exception to the rule, as Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare came out on top yet again. There’s a caveat to all of this of course, as the NPD sales figures via VG247 only track physical US sales. But considering the size of that market, it’s still a good indicator to go by. Anyway, the NPD numbers point to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare topping the charts in December and 2016, with EA’s Battlefield 1 hot on its heels. Here’s the top ten list for December:

  1. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Final Fantasy 15 (PS4, Xbox One)
  3. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  4. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  5. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Watch Dogs 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  7. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Pokémon Sun (3DS)
  9. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  10. Pokémon Moon (3DS)

And for 2016 itself:

  1. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  2. Battlefield 1 (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  3. The Division (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  4. NBA 2K17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  5. Madden NFL 17 (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  7. Overwatch (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  9. FIFA 17 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  10. Final Fantasy 15 (PS4, Xbox One)

As mentioned above, these are only physical US sales. So who knows how many copies Blizzard’s Overwatch really shifted then. But for what it’s worth, Call of Duty isn’t going anywhere anytime soon with positions on the charts like that. Meanwhile, GTA V continues to be a best-seller thanks to GTA Online – and Nintendo still has that Pokémon magic.

Some things never change.

Something wrong gentlemen? You come here prepared to read the words of a madman, and instead found a lunatic obsessed with comics, Batman and Raul Julia's M Bison performance in the 1994 Street Fighter movie? Fine! Keep your bio! In fact, now might be a good time to pray to it!

  • These lists I think are getting pretty pointless as digital sales are fast taking over the majority of sales if it hasn’t already.

    • PurplePariah

It’s not pointless to the guys working at the retail gaming stores. 🙂

  • lol

  • PurplePariah

So like 2015’s list, but with incremental numbers.

    And a Final Fantasy. Finally.

    • Hammersteyn

      Yay!

  • Neji

And yet the peak player count for IW on the PC platform was somewhere along the lines of 15K

    • PurplePariah

CoD is far more competitive on consoles though. PC is dominated by MOBAs and CS:GO.

      • Hammersteyn

        Mouse aiming for what?

    • MonsterCheddar

There are, against popular belief, other gaming platforms than PC. 😛

  • Viper_ZA

    CoD = PoS

  • Well there is a reason why we don’t call people from the US “smart”

  • Hammersteyn

Hypocrites, dislike the trailer, buy the game anyway

  • Magoo

The absolute best known proof of the fact that “popular” != “good”

  • MonsterCheddar

Well well well. Its actually not a bad game. Got it for Xmas and the part that I have played is actually quite good.

    • Hammersteyn

      You American you

      • MonsterCheddar

Think I will finish the campaign and check the multiplayer out this weekend when I have 5 min to spare. 😛

  • Banana Jim’s Final Form!

After all these years, Grand Theft Auto 5 is still up there, kicking down doors, taking names, and stealing cars….

Its 2017 … your Infinite Warfare will soon be obsolete.
