That Day 1 Wii U update? Nintendo’s really sorry

Those of you’ll be picking up a Wii U tomorrow will have to endure a pretty damned big Day 1 firmware update, clocking in at 5GBs, which will take those of you with 384Kb/s lines roughly forever to download. The good news is that the update can be downloaded in the background while you play actual games, but the bad news is that if it fails during the update, you could brick your console. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is really, really sorry about that.

“Personally I think that users should be able to use all the functions of a console video game machine as soon as they open the box,” he said to IGN via email.

“So I feel very sorry for the fact that purchasers of Wii U have to experience a network update which takes such a long time, and that there are the services which were not available at the hardware’s launch.”

The update will be required for users to take part in much of the Nintendo Network’s functionality – but Nintendo’s confident you’ll be happy once you’ve played around with its unique online offering.

“It is challenging to communicate attractions which are hard to understand unless you actually touch and experience them yourself. This is especially so with Wii U because it has unprecedented entertainment potential,” Iwata said.

“We have not thought that offering the same features that already exist within other online communities would be the best proposal for very experienced game players,” Iwata said.

“Nintendo has paid a great deal of attention to the dynamic of people playing video games together in the same room. With Wii U, we thought about expanding this concept into separate rooms which are connected online. Miiverse is a network community dedicated to video games that represents a very unique game-dedicated social graph that has never existed before.”

Nintendo’s Wii U will be available locally tomorrow, with the basic console retailing for R3999, the deluxe black 32Gb model for R4599 and the ZombiU pack going for R4999.
