The 80GB PS3 is no more

I don’t know if this is good news or not for us PAL areas, however it looks like that 80GB PS3 model the NTSC areas have is no more.

According to a leaked memo from Best Buy in the States the only model going forward is the 40GB one. Which means, as they state so elegantly, “There currently isn’t a version that is PS2 compatible.

There have been rumours of a new white PS3 coming soon and a new cheaper model which will retail at $299.

Not sure what they could remove to make it drop down to $299 though as I could pretty much bet the house on the fact that they will not be removing that Blu-Ray drive or Cell processor.

    Saw this coming…
PS3 will only cont in the 40gig.. no more 20, 60 or 80 gig.
Its so easy to upgrade the HDD anyway. Only downside is that backward compatibility is gone for the 40 gig. Maybe sony will make it available via a download. However according to sony that move was made from feedback they received from users..

@Abe, Steve Foster the guy who runs Sony Europe (and us) has stated that we are not getting anything else other than the 40GB in the forseeable future. Yeah he may be not telling us the entire truth but I doubt we are seeing the 80GB anytime soon.

@Evilredzombie, Apparently they cannot offer the BC through a software download. It requires some sort of hardware as well… That is what I heard at least. Otherwise why would they leave it out?

Well as you said, they decided to drop BC after market research revealed that most dont want it. Personally I cant care for BC, why would you wanna play old outdated games when there are so many kickass ones coming out!
And if im not mistaken PS3 sales are at an all time high, so I guess most people arnt phased by the 40gb, its only the nets crazed fanboys that keep harping on useless stuff.

    Such as yourself? 😉

I seriously don’t trust anything a sales troll tells me. I’ve heard things from PS3’s playing PC games to Halo coming out on Playstation. They know absolutely nothing.

Well good day to you young sir 😉

Yes I am thoroughly thanks. I’m suffering from an embarrassment of riches at the moment, too many games I’m trying to get through at once! With the ’08 season kicking into gear with Burnout Paradise, it’s only getting worse!

    Yourself? What are you playing?
