When multiplayer games on consoles began to experience massive popularity years ago, Star Wars Battlefront was one of those titles that led the charge to victory, with a popular sequel following shortly afterwards, just in time for a certain Sith-revengin’ prequel film.

You’d think that Lucasarts would be keen to have cranked out more sequels for one of their few successful Star Wars games, but its been over six years now since Battlefront 2 launched. That might be changing though, as it seems a third instalment is finally on the way.

Developer Spark Unlimited have been previously linked towards the creation of Battlefront 3, but the studio has been quieter than the planet of Alderaan on the subject, with their site containing a statement that reads:

We are in production on an unannounced high-profile, popular game sequel for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC release

Now, after some batmanning from Playstation-Lifestyle.net, it seems that there is more evidence to back up the original rumours, as Spark Unlimited recently posted a job-listing that read as follows;

Spark is looking for a senior combat designer for a 3rd Person Action/Adventure sequel in ahigh-profile science fiction franchise currently greenlit for full production development for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC markets.

Adding further fuel to the Bothan bonfire, Former Spark Unlimited Senior Software Engineer John Lawrie linked the following work under his Linkedin profile;

Of course, the Call of Duty: Finest Hour developer could be working on a different science fiction franchise – not that there are that many that aren’t already signed to a developer. But then there’s the LinkedIn profile for John Lawrie, who used to be Senior Software Engineer for Spark Unlimited, which lists under his work for the developer:

Unannounced third person sword fighting game (well known IP, Xbox 360, PS3)

And seeing as how Eidos canned that Highlander game that they were working on a while back already, there aren’t too many other candidates in this particular galaxy to explore. Besides, what other sword is more iconic than a light-saber?

So, add up all the facts, guns, swords, sci-fi and sequel, and chances are pretty good that this is in fact Battlefront 3, especially when the developer tweets the following;

With gaming beginning to favour multiplayer aspects more and more nowadays, the market is once again ripe for a title that focuses solely on that gameplay feature.

And considering that the IP in question is one that is still massively popular fans all over the world, it looks like we might get to unleash our inner Stormtroopers and Jedi in a more fast-paced environment once again.

It’s still all rumours at this point though, so take these facts with a pinch of salt.
