The great Xbox 360 warranty confusion

Here is how I understand how the warranties on Xbox 360’s work…

When you buy the console you are given a 1 year, everything covered, warranty and a seperate 3 year RROD warranty… If your 360 RROD’s you are given an instant replacement and your warranty continues from original date of purchase…

However this has caused some problems for people who’s second consoles have died a few months after getting them and the shops haven’t replaced them due to it now being over a year since the original date of purchase…

However this is actually not true and Fox1 has been kind enough to dig up the information about the warranty…

When you buy a 360 (lets say the 1st of June 2008) you are given a years warranty on everything (valid until June 2009) and a three year RROD warranty (valid to 1st June 2011)….

If your console then RROD’s in July 2009 you can take it in to get replaced, your RROD warranty is then still valid until June 2011 however your one year warranty then starts again and is now valid until July 2010..

The shops will often try and tell you different but according to the official Microsoft website this is the case as you can see here

Q: How does this warranty differ from your existing warranty?
A: Currently, any Xbox 360 is covered by a one year manufacturer’s warranty (two years in some parts of the world).  If the console is out of warranty, there is a charge to have it repaired.  It then comes with an additional one year repair warranty.  With these changes, there is effectively a three year warranty with no charge for repair for general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights error code which displays on the console.

I bought mine from IC and when the DVD broke and I got the replacement machine they gave me a new proof of purchase and said that the warranty runs from the new date.

Other stores are charging a fee and continuing the warranty. That’s why I ended up actually reading about the warranty

No not anymore. Out of interest the “OPUS” 360 has been released, so even the repair/swapout first gen 360 now have the new cooler chips and heatsinks.

I’m still on my second. I treated my first one like a piece of glass… I tried to do all the “right” things to prevent the RROD. But, of course the thing died. I just abuse the new one. Well…maybe “abuse” is not the right word, but this time I don’t worry about the RROD because I figure no matter what I do, it’s going to show up eventually anyway 😉

You know whats funny? When my Elite broke and BT Games Pavilion couldn’t replace it, they phoned the main branch and the lady there said she has one but I must pay the courier fee! I ended up getting my money back.

so if I bought a console 3 years and 2 months and I got a replacement 9 months ago, will that 1 year warranty cover the RROD if it happened now or will i have to pay for replacement?
this is of coarse in a hypothetical question

Yes your console would be covered because the console that you were replaced with has a new 1 year warranty and a new 3 year warranty for RROD 😎

You are missing the line before the highlight…. “If the console is out of warranty, there is a charge to have it repaired. It then comes with an additional one year repair warranty.”

If you pay to have it repaired over the initial 1 year for something other than RROD, then your warranty is extended to another 1 year, since you have paid for the repair.

Because we browse it often, :-D. Well I’ll be testing that with my old Pro as it’s sitting in the lounge not being used since it’s RROD. I just bought an Arcade to replace it.

Have you confirmed this with MS? I think you are wrong. Otherwise you would get an indefinite warranty on your console if you kept sending it back before each year was up. It’s a new year if you pay for the repair out of warranty on the non-RROD related repairs.

No it doesn’t. I swapped out my Dec 06 bought 360 in Sep 07 for an E74. Then when I had to swap out that one in Jan 08 because it was saying my games were DVDs I got charged R684 for a new one. The guy said it was because I was out of my 3month warranty you get on swap-outs. This was at MID head offices by the way. They would not even give me a 173watter either!

Unfortunately MS has changed the warranty policy only a few months ago.

Find out if you can be refunded.
