Platforming is easily one of the simple game genres; you run, jump and collect stuff. It’s a genre we’ve all played since we first found the joy of video games – but despite their retro appearances platformers have delivered some of the most entertaining and challenging games of our time. 2011 was an especially good year for the genre – but which of the many platformers made us happiest?
Here are the nominees for best platformer:
Ms Splosion Man
LittleBigPlanet 2
Sonic Generations
Rayman Origins
Kirby’s Adventure Wii
Super Mario 3D Land
Outland
And the award goes to:
Winner: Rayman Origins
As a platform connoisseur, no other game has put more smiles on my face than Rayman Origins. Ubisoft ditched the rabbids in order to resurrect the limbless Rayman. Origins serves as a prequel to the side-scrolling franchise that features single player and four-player co-op accessible throughout the entire game. It perfectly distils everything from just about every good platformer, combining it all to bring you the very best, most beautiful game in the genre.
Runner-Up: LittleBigPlanet 2
