Every year, it’s the same story. A host of video game critics get together, cast votes and decide on the best games of E3. And every freakin’ year our invite gets lost in the mail. Although I’m starting to suspect that the event known only as “The 2007 Incident” might be responsible for eternal banishment as well. E3 2016 might have been a smaller show this year, but it had some damn fine games on display.

While Battlefield 1 may have scored most of the nominations, it was Nintendo who walked away as the big winner with victories in the Best of Show, Best Console Game and Best Action/Adventure with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild. A grand total of 40 different media outlets were blown away by the next entry in the Zelda series, while Civilization VI got a pair of awards for the PC platform. Here’s the full list of winners to sift through, while we ready our toilet paper stocks to go prank the house that the E3 critics stay in:

Best of Show

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
(Nintendo/Nintendo for Wii-U/NX)

Best Original Game

Horizon Zero Dawn
(Guerrilla Games/Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 4)

Best Console Game

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
(Nintendo/Nintendo for Wii-U/NX)

Best VR Game

Batman: Arkham VR
(Rocksteady/Warner Bros. Interactive Ent for PlayStation 4)

Best PC Game

Civilization VI
(Firaxis/2K)

Best Hardware/Peripheral

PlayStation VR
(Sony Interactive Entertainment)

Best Action Game

Battlefield 1
(DICE/EA for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One)

Best Action/Adventure Game

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
(Nintendo/Nintendo for Wii-U/NX)

Best Role Playing Game

Final Fantasy XV
(Square-Enix for PlayStation 4, Xbox One)

Best Racing Game

Forza Horizon 3
(Playground Games/Turn 10/Microsoft Studios for PC, Xbox One)

Best Sports Game

Steep
(Ubisoft Annecy/Ubisoft for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One)

Best Family Game

Skylanders: Imaginators
(Toys for Bob/Activision for PC, PS3/PS4, Xbox 360/Xbox One, Wii-U)

Best Online Multiplayer

Titanfall 2
(Respawn/EA for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One)

Best Independent Game

Inside
(Playdead for PC, Xbox One)

Special Commendation for Graphics

God of War
(Sony Santa Monica/Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 4)

Now that’s a great line-up. It’s not too hard to see why The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild was a big winner, as Nintendo has managed to create something magical and new in a series that always manages to reinvent itself with each new iteration.

I guess they had to give Ubisoft some sort of award somewhere as a constellation prize for a gaming company going down the drain.

Can’t see any RPG categories. Would have put my money on either FF15 or South Park

But FF15 did get “Best RPG” in the list above.

This is a great list for a change, there’s actually one game on it I’ll get.

I’m interested in Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and Zelda, of course. But the Zelda door is closed to me, being NX exclusive and all.
