The next Assassin’s Creed game is a total overhaul

Assassin’s Creed 3 was meant to be a major step forward for the Ubisoft created franchise of hidden blades and Templars. Suffice to say, Assassin’s Creed 3 didn’t exactly leap ahead, as it went face first into a wall of stupid and missed the gap entirely. The franchise is far from dead however, and more titles will be on the way. But don’t expect to see Assassin’s Creed 3: Dances with wolves at the end of this year, because Ubisoft has some new ideas up their hidden sleeves.

Ubisoft has announced that the next game in the series will once again feature a new Assassin and time period to explore, and will be out in the fiscal year of 2014, which is anywhere from April 2013 to March 2014. Ubisoft president Yves Guillermot said at a quarterly financial meeting via Polygon that the next title will be a “major leap forward”, and will be handled by a brand new development team.

We are delighted and proud to announce today that in financial year ’14, we will introduce an all-new Assassin’s Creed hero, within an all new team and time period. We expect it to be another major leap forward for the franchise. It is the benefit of multiple teams working on multiple chapters of the product, each getting several years to make their versions of an Assassin’s Creed game.

I welcome that decision. Assassin’s Creed 3 had a combat system that was too disengaging, chase sequences from hell, a villain who was far more enjoyable than the hero himself and an ending that adopted the KTHNXBAI approach to wrapping up five years of work. On the plus side, I will admit that the naval battles were superb, the visuals incredible and the authenticity of a colonial America amazing.

If Ubisoft can work out those kinks and create a game that has a far less clunky combat system with a protagonist that we can actually root for, then they might have a game on their hand that’s more in line with the better games from the franchise, such as Assassin’s Creed 2 and Brotherhood. As for those time periods where the game could be set? who knows, but we still had a few ideas of our own a couple of months ago on that subject.
