The PS3 destroys Japan – WTF happened?

The latest Japanese sales are out and Sony are the boys with the biggest smile out this weekend.

First up is the fact that the PSP went head to head with the new Nintendo DSi and matched it in sales. Both the PSP and DSi managed to sell 36 000 units and it’s only down to the fact that the DS Lite sold 4900 that Nintendo manages to keep it’s grubby paws on that leaderboard.

However when it comes to the home consoles there is a new undisputed leader in Japan.

Recently the PS3 has been outselling the Wii week on week by a small amount but this week it managed to sell a staggering 42 000 more than the Wii.

That’s not a typo, I actually went to 4 sites to verify the fact that Famitsu is reporting PS3 sales of 57 000 and Wii sales of 15 000 with the 360 far behind with 7600 sales.

So what happened this week to make such a difference? Well don’t let anyone try and convince you that Final Fantasy is not an important franchise to Sony, the only thing that spurred these sales was the release of that Final Fantasy Demo.

Makes me think of an article way back when someone said the ps3 was doomed.

Not that i’m complaining but it doesn’t seem possible that a demo can spur that kind of sales, unless the Japs are really desperate for FF.

that’s why I put WTF in the title,… I can’t find any other reason for the very sudden turn around though?

its probably in anticipation for the final release. they obviously don’t want to find out that stores are out of stock of ps3’s and your shiny new copy ff don’t work so good on your wee.

    makes sense to me
