The Vita’s kicking off Clone Wars with a blatant Trials ripoff

UrbanTrials

There’s a new PSN game coming for the PlayStation Vita. It’s an urban, physics-based 2.5D motorcross game where you have to complete increasingly difficult, ludicrously created tracks within a time limit – and them compete with your friends’ ghost times. According the game’s official PR nonsense, it’ll have players “Take on and beat several stunt challenges placed on each track to beat the record. Download friend stunt’s records and beat them carving your own name in the game world thanks to unique in-game leaderboards.” That sounds rather damned familiar.

Worse is its terribly unimaginative name; Urban Trials. Really?

The game’s coming from Tate Interactive – and is scheduled for early this year – which mean’s it’s a little late. It’s obviously an unashamed clone of the Microsoft published, RedLynx developed Trials Evolution. I can’t say I’m unhappy about it though; the prospect of a portable Trials sounds pretty damned amazing to me – provided it’s a good clone. Funnily enough, it’s not the only unabashed clone coming to a Sony platform soon. PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale pretty much looks like a copy/paste of Nintendo’s fantastic Super Smash Bros.

What’s next? Big-boned Princess coming to the Xbox? A game about a desert travelling robed nomad called Expedition? A First person shooter where you take on masked humanoid aliens called MurderArea? Of course, as Darryn pointed out in his excellent video, Trials wasn’t the first game of this ilk, and is likely to be the last…so for now, let’s just call it homage, rather than straight out rip-off.
