Steam Machine

Corey Nelson was one of those select few who will be taking part in the Steam Machine beta. He got his  hardware, and made an unboxing video.

First up, here’s the unboxing:

For those of you who can’t or don’t watch videos, here’s the run down: The Steam Machine comes in an impressive wooden box. Seriously, that case alone looks cool. But let’s look at what’s inside the box. Packed in foam is a heavy Steam Box, the controller, a manual, and HDMI cable, USB cable (to charge the controller), a power cable, a wifi antenna and a recovery USB key. The box itself looks rather nondescript, although I suppose we can’t really complain – the Xbox One also isn’t much to look at.

In his next video, Nelson proceeds to look inside the Steam Machine box:

For those non-video people among you, the components are all tightly packed in the box. To be honest, this guy doesn’t sound that interesting to me. However, for those who like these kinds of things, you can watch him unscrew the whole box and see all the housing, connectors and all the bits and pieces.

Now that I’ve seen the actual Steam Machine, I’m not sure I see the point in buying a commercially manufactured one – you could just as easily make one out of a PC and load up the OS and buy a controller. The box itself seems so bland and uninteresting. That said, it depends on the retail price of these things. If it’s equivalent to a console, then it will be cheaper than a gaming PC and thus more affordable. I’m really keen to get my hands on one of these, but I’m less impressed with the actual look of the Machine.

Then again, it is still in hardware beta – and we’ll be seeing a few different Steam machines in the future.

I really appreciate it that you’re telling us poor non-video watching folk what’s in the video. Nothing more annoying than going to an article & all it consists of is a video with zero description.

Steam isn’t the company to expect that from. Hence why I love them so much. Look at Uplay and Origin. Looks fancy, not a 10th as functional as Steam.

Though I do understand, bling for the man-cave is a must. Rather go for understated than overstated though. 😉

Initially I was intrigued by the idea of Steam boxes, but watching this now.. honestly I think this thing is gonna tank. PC guys like PC gaming because.. it’s a PC. This is like the worst of both worlds. Not quite console and not quite PC. If I ever get back into PC gaming I’ll rather build my own rig and install Steam OS on it with dual boot. Seems more sensible.

This is a dev box to test the software. Besides the controller, I doubt Valve will ever release their own Steambox.

The term “Steambox” is about the same as “android smartphone”. You should begin to see numerous tech companies such as LG, Samsung, Asus and so on, each releasing their own “Steambox” with their own choice of chosen internals. What they all have in common would be SteamOS and the controller.

I’m curious about the upgrading of these Steam machines, I assume the steam library will continue to get better next-gen games, at some point the steam machine will not be able to play some games.

Then what? Is it disposable tech or will they release hardware upgrades….

I dont believe Steam will ever release a steambox of their own. These seem to be dev kits so that people can test out the software.

I expect the upgrade cycle would be the same as the consoles upgrade cycles. Like upgrading your sony console (from version PS3 to version PS4) every 5 years, you would upgrade your LG Steambox 1 to an LG Steambox 2.

At the end its going to be very good for us, because the competition between the different companies is going to push them to pack more of a punch and for less of the price. We will also probably get some awesome game bundles with it.

I think it’s an appealing prospect for console gamers. Better hardware than the new consoles, options for game modding, huge library of awesome games not limited to one generation, Steam sales, no multiplayer subscriptions, etc. It all really depends on how this SteamOS turns out but if it delivers, Sony and Microsoft will have serious competition. Did I mention Steam sales?
