Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics may be teasing a new Soul Reaver game

Legacy of Kain (1)

You remember the Legacy of Kain series of games? I ‘MEMBER! I remember vampiric action on a grand scale, spilling blood and drinking it up as a legendary monster. I especially remember a particular game, that cast players as Kain’s glorious lieutenant Raziel, whose greatest sin was to grow a pair of wings that were like totally fly and stuff before Kain got a haterection and ripped them off of the fella, casting him into the lake of the dead to rot and die for eternity.

That game was Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, and back in 1999 it was awesome. Equal parts action and puzzle-solving in a third-person adventure flavour, Soul Reaver was simply ahead of its time. Crystal Dynamics would pump out a sequel to continue the tale of his Raziel as he followed Kain through time, with the story eventually reaching an end with 2003’s Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

That game was supposed to lead into another sequel under the guidance of Relic Entertainment, but that was canned along with another stab at the series in the form of Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun. A pity then, because Kain and Raziel have been long overdue for a revival. A revival that Crystal Dynamics may be teasing fans with:

The developer has been dropping tweets referencing Raziel and their Soul Reaver days, leading many to speculate that Kain’s legacy ain’t dead yet. Back in 2015, Crystal Dynamics lead designer Michael Brinker still remarked to Finder that a return to Nosgoth was always “50/50” at that studio:

We have in-house developers who really want to make that game. It’s interesting because people look back at our history and our franchises and see that we have some really great iconic IPs. So gamers wonder; ‘where are they and what are they doing?’ Well we’re always tossing around and talking about ideas [of bringing them back]. It really is 50/50.

So what form could all this teasing take? I’d put money down on Soul Reaver GO, but I’d also bet my Bitcoin on a full HD remaster ahead of a full-fledged sequel. Whatever the result, if Crystal Dynamics does have something planned then I doubt anyone would complain to see the bloodsuckers return to resume their age-old conflict.

HD remaster of the original with subtitles (being mostly deaf means that I missed a lot of dialogue in the original), then a full-fledged sequel and I will be throwing a lot of money at Crystal Dynamics. I hope they can pull it off, Nosgoth was a big failure…

This is honestly the best news I have heard in years. If its true…if it’s not, then they can burn in hell for playing with my emotions.

If you’ve ever played multiplayer games with me, then you will know that my nickname is Reaver. This franchise is why. It’s the best narrative in gaming I have ever encountered!
